Infection to PORT post-op

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, (Port-infection)

I had surgery on March 12. A week post-op I noticed an infection developing at the post site area under the skin. Redness and warmth, but no drainage. My doctor started me on Antibiotics right away, but it did not respond to the antibiotics and a second antibiotic was added 6 days later. Still did not get any better - continued to get worse. Now my doctor opened the incision back up again today and drained it, but the infection reached the port itself and the port is now contaminated and I now have go through another surgery to have the port removed and possible even the band if the infection reached the band too. He said he will try and salvage the band and just replace the port. Has anyone else gone through this? I am very discouraged, having to get this replacement done.

I just wanted to say I am sorry for what you are going through. I hope it all works out. I am sure it will. I had some issues myself with swelling but it seems to have worked itself out. Keep us posted.

Altho' you experience can happen, I believe it is a low occurring event. I am sorry for your troubles. I pray the doctor only has to replce your port. Good luck. Please update and keep us posted of your progress.

I had surgery in July - got infected in late October ( my doctor was on vacation and I think his partner missed the signs). Anyway - port taken out in Nov 08 - replaced in a new spot in Jan 09 - followed by 2 weeks of iv anit-bios. All in all - 2nd and 3rd surgeries are a piece of cake compared to the 1st. Email me if you have any questions. Good luck

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
