Hi!

I've read a lot of stuff on here and appreciate all of the information you've all shared! Thank you!

I went to a seminar about bariatric surgery a couple of weeks ago and don't think I'll get it done there (they seemed too pushy) but I have a question. They said that you have to give up carbonated beverages for the rest of your life. Is this true? I've never seen anything on here about that. I know it seems trivial in the big picture but I really like having a diet coke every day. Will I have to give it up forever? Why? Just curious. Thanks for the help!

:huh2:

i've not been banded yet (4/21 woohoo) but the reason behind that is the carbonation irritates your pouch. it causes gas and is simply painful from what i've gathered here. I know some doctors say a little every once in a while and some say warm and flat while still others say never ever. I guess it's something you have to weigh and decide if the cost is worth the result. Good luck :0)

Hey! My doctor told me that I can't have soda or those drinks again. The reason he gave me is because the bubbles in it have air and when they pop the air can expand the pouch. I was a Pepsi addict. However, I am three weeks banded and haven't had one. I am in love with Crystal light! lol. I don't really miss it. However, if I were you I wouldnt let the fact that I couldn't have diet Coke be the determing factor for WLS... Much love!

Thanks! It won't be the determining factor, just a lifestyle change issue. I've seen some stuff about coffee here so I'll have to learn about that. I gave up caffeine already, so one more step can't be too bad! :huh2:

Hi, Susie. There are many posters here who will tell you to do what your doc says. Now, that being said, here is my experience. I was a Diet Coke drinker...about 6 cans a day. The nutritionist said the carbonation is bad for the first year. Well, I had a craving last week and sent her an email asking if it would hurt me to have one. The answer was "NO it won't hurt the band! Just don't make it a habit." So, after 6 months doing without I had one and it was fine. I shook out some of the bubbles first and took it slow. But, OMG, did I belch up a storm.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
