Slipped band-Surgery scheduled for Wednesday

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I've been having problems for the last two + weeks. Vomiting, heartburn, no food going down. Two times back to the lap band doc and he finally removed all the Fluid in the band. Then a 3 day visit in the hospital via the ER while the lap band doc was out of town. The hospital doc (admittingly not versed on the lap band) said I had a gastric obstruction. Well my lap band doc came back into town and called me in to his office today only to tell me that I have a slipped band, prolapsed stomach etc. He had already scheduled surgery for Wednesday. He gave me the option of doing emergency surgery today, but I opted out.

I was just wondering if anyone else could share with me their lap band slippage corrective surgery experience? I'm a little nervous here. I've received a lot of support in the past on this website and was hoping for some now!!

Thanks to all that read!

I was banded on 10/2/07 but I got sick a couple of weeks ago and as a result my band slipped. My doctor gave me the option of waiting to see if it went back on its own so for the last two weeks I have been waiting with no Fluid in the band. Well I got something stuck and ended up in the ER on 3/17 where my doctor said I would need emergency surgery. He said he might be able to fix it but if there was too much damage to my stomache he may have to take it out. He said if the damage was minimal he was going to take the band out and put in another one, the Realize band, that he felt had much less cases of slippage because it was wider. I had surgery, they put another band in, the Realize band and I am still on my full liquid diet with my follow appt. on Wednesday. I feel great and I am so relieved that I did not loose the band completely. I feel like I am recovering much faster this time around.

Thanks for sharing your story. It is always helpful to hear that someone else has experienced what you are going thru and that you are not alone!! I have the Allergen band (spelling), I wasn't aware that different bands had different success rates. I can only hope this will be the last time I have to deal with a slipped band!

Good luck to you and I'm glad you're feeling better.

Thanks again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
