Newbie Questions - Coffee & Water??

Recommended Posts

My insurance company has approved my surgery so I am just waiting to get the surgery scheduled! :frown:

There seems to be differing info. on whether or not we can drink regular coffee after the surgery. I was planning to have a tiny espresso cup of coffee in the mornings once I am a couple weeks post-surgery, but the dietician told me "No More Coffee After Surgery!" unless it is de-caf. :( I don't see this exclusion in any of the lap band info. I have read. Are you still drinking coffee?

This might sound like a silly question, but how do you make sure that you get all your Water in every day when you can't take in a lot at one time and with the stop/start drinking around meals? Just sip, sip, sip all day long?

One of my surgeon's requirements is that his patients give up caffiene entirely prior to surgery and forever after. The rationale is that it makes one more prone to ulcers. I've switched to 1/2 caf this week and am limiting myself to 3 cups a day. I used to dring high-test all day long, so am slowly weaning myself off.:frown:

At group support this month the dietician talked about caffeine. She said it tends to dehydrate you, so they recommend against it. The Water is designed to keep you hydrated. I was never a coffee drinker so it wasn't an issue for me. I was a water drinker but I even had to up that to get the 64 oz a day they recommend we get in. I carry a water bottle everywhere.

My doc said no caffeine for 30 days after surgery. After that He says to limit. I am 14 months out. I still have some issues about getting in my Vitamins, B complex, Iron and LEvothyroxin. None of these can be taken with caffeine, I have to time it just right. Levo in the morning first thing, then my reg coffee. 3 hrs later multi, then with my fruit I have to take my iron and a sip Water. If I don't get it in this order or get off track, it tends to happen multiple days in a row. So According to how we eat. My iron runs up and down 11.3- 13.8. I keep track due to donating blood for red cross, If it is below 12.1 I cannot give, I have to wait. SO I have to be very careful to make sure all is on track every day. So along with leeping a food journal,I keep a vit journal, exercise journal. It has to keep us honest. I can drink Decaf and I still have 1 cup reg first thing in the am(4:30). I think after you get the overload out of your body, we're ok then. So now I can drink decaf any time of the day!!

Since you are a newby, you will find out real fast the things that make a difference that will help or hurt your progress, new life new eating habits, new journey,,ENJOY. Treat your band with respect.:rolleyes2:

There is obviously a variety of views on this subject. My doctor had no problem with coffee or caffeine, so I continued to drink coffee and tea post surgery, up until today.

That having been said, I don't drink nearly as much of either as I did before. I think the general idea of redefined limits is central to success with the band.

My doctor says that we can have coffee (but it must be black) with no sugar or cream, milk, or anything of that nature. I'm not a huge coffee drinker...but this may affect me..b/c on occassion i do like to have a cup of coffee with milk and sugar.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
