Life Insurance & the band

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any experience with Life Insurance companies in relation to the Lap-Band?

Do they view it as a good thing? Will having it done lower my premium?

Or do they view it as a potential risk?

Since common sense & logic does not always prevail in these sorts of things, anyone direct experience with this please share...

THANKS

Ooh, good question! One of the things I'm hoping for is once I reach goal weight being able to buy a life insurance policy without paying ridiculous amounts of money because I'm overweight. Hopefully having the band won't even be an issue.

Funny you should mention this. I just got some added Life Insurance through Chase and they asked me all kinds of questions about the band but nothing they asked would have negated the increase in my Life Insurance. The guy was just curious about it. He said the only thing that might make it delayed being accepted is they might need to contact my Band surgeon to get some info. So far I haven't been denied Life Insurance. I have alot of coverage and this was just some extra I was going for.

i would like to know too,

I do not have Life insurance, they turned me down due to BMI.

I work for a medical clinic, and dont cover anything to do with weight. I will have to make a few calls.

The weight is a factor with Life and Health insurance unless you get either or both through your employer. I was just sent my Chase Life Insurance policy post band so it isn't a factor for them.

mine was through my employer, and still turned down just off the application.

Oh well, i just spent my retirement on surgery. I will apply im a year and see what they say.

FYI, you may not have to wait as long as you think. I was told that even getting down to the low 200's would drastically reduce my premium, so no need to wait until you're at goal. This was thru Selectquote. They also said that if I lost further weight it was a simple process to rewrite the policy and get an even lower premium. Of course that was before 2 other surgeries. They'd probably tell me to take a flying leap now... :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
