Sore throat 3 days post op, any ideas?

Recommended Posts

I don't know why my throat is so sore... I don't know if it is from being intubated or what. I am 3 days post-op and the pain comes and goes, sometimes its mild but sometimes its really bad. It feels like someone is blowing a balloon in my throat.

Did this happen to anyone else? Any suggestions on how to avoid it would be much appreciated!

It is probably from being intubated, but if it persists, call you regular pcp. I think most people do have some discomfort from that darn tube.

i had a sore throat too for a few days post op. i found that sipping on tea or hot Water with a bit of lemon and honey really helped.

make sure to double up on your Vitamin c. it will help strengthen your immune system and facilitate your recovery.

I know it seems so insignificant compared to what we just put our bodies through, but the sore throat was the absolute worst for me! When I woke up in recovery, all I kept saying was my throat hurts and my mouth is dry. Being on a dilaudid drip for two days, my throat was literally my only discomfort...until I got home of course!

The hospital gave me a numbing spray, which helped a bit. Drinking bouillon in hot Water helped a lot as well. I'm four days out today and it's the first day with no throat pain...so you're right around the corner! Now I have to put up with the painful gas, or at least what I think is gas!

Did you have an endoscopy during the surgery? I had to have one six days prior to my main surgery for the doctor to look around and down into the stomach to check for any damage to the esophogus from acid reflux. After that procedure I also had a terrible sore throat. I was able to take liquid tylenol (children's but in a larger dose) and that seemed to help. I also had warm tea. It was better after about three days. Good luck!

my throat is very sore and very red... It feels as though I have strep but I don't. Foods/liquids irriate and burn it. Tylenol gives me some relief, but as soon as it wears off I need an other dose right away. What do you think this could be? I have been to the Dr. and he says this is normal and will go away. It hasn't yet, and he even gave me a antibiotic. 6 days post-op now.

My throat hurt too when I woke from surgery. I wasn't aware they tube'd you during surgery, but they do (sometimes), and it causes some "sore throat" symptoms. Chewing on ice and swallowing some cold Water helped...Although in the mornings, the hot liquid is required first.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
