Trying to learn what my band is telling me...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I was banded on 3/12/09 -- such an exciting day! When I first came home from the hospital I did feel a tightness in my stomach, I'm sure from the swelling. I didn't have much of an appetite and I definitely felt full while eating full liquids. Today I can move on to the pureed diet. I've been noticing the last few days that after I have new sensations. Instead of feeling full while I eat, the full liquids are still going down fine, I notice about a half our later that I feel a tightness in my back, just below my shoulder blades. It's not a fullness feeling like I expect in my stomach but a strange low grade discomfort in my back. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this my body telling me I'm full?

I'd be grateful to hear from others.

My back pain is sometimes when I'm lying down or in the morning. But mostly it seems to be after I've eaten. It's also dull like yours. I'm not sure if it means I've eaten too much or the wrong things or it is just part of the healing process. Since it's not like I feel too full, and I honestly could eat more, I'm not sure if this a new sign that I'm full. It's confounding for sure.

I know you're looking to find out from others who have this same issue. I just wanted to let you know that I don't have that feeling. I was banded 3/9 and I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone in feeling like I could eat more. I get a feeling in my lowest left rib - sort of like what a stitch feels like when you're running when I'm full. But no back pain at all. I hope that helps if only to know that it seems (perhaps according to how our nerves are wired) that the new feelings seem to be very different for some vs. others.

it sounds alot like Post-operative gas pain to me. I had the same thing. The shoulder pain lasted 1-2 weeks, the back pain lasted 1.5 months and was horrible...when it hit me, I had to sit down no matter where I was. It disseappeared after that. There is nothing you can do about it except drink Water and walk. I took alot of children's chewalbe tylenol which helped with the pain.

It doesn't feel like normal gas pain, because the gas isn't in your stomach and intestines, it's in your general abdomen cavity, and has no way to escape except though your skin and blood. I found it got worse as the day went by and not long after eating, probably because the eating caused normal gas, which caused pressure in my abdomen. It was horrible, but it did go away! Hang in there!

Maybe to much to fast, your band is open and you can drink lots of Fluid.

You need to sip and slow down.

I would have to say your having gas pains. After consuming Protein shakes or what not. Anything that has a tendency to go down alittle fast will cause more air for some odd reason. I am 14 months out, Within an hour of having a Frozen Protein shake I will have gas. When I eat salads I have more gas.

What you're probably feeling is still the gas from surgery, it rises inside your body. You notice it more after you are eating Full liquids, it is pushing on it from the inside as your tummy fills with liquids the gas rises. The more you walk the faster it will go away. I had some severe shoulder pain, by late afternoon post -op. I knew I had to walk, it hurt really bad to lie down.. Good luck , hang in there.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
