Anything I need for my week following surgery?

Recommended Posts

Okayy so I have a shopping list of somethings I need, but I would like to know (since I won't be leaving the house for a while) what will I need to stock up on to get me through my liquids and mushies phase?? Also anything you wish you would have had to help through the healing process (not pertaining to food...or even if it is).

*I realize the wording of this post may be hard to understand, & i'm sorry for that...i just couldn't think of a better way to put it*

any help would be appreciated ...thankss :)

heating pad, CHAPSTICK, sugar free pops, Soups all different kinds (that are smooth or can be strained) liquid tylenol, gas x strips and chewables (sometimes the chewables worked better on bad gas) caffeine free tea ( the warm felt good and broth gets old) for mushies refried Beans but you should be leaving the house by this stage, i was out walking the day after surgery, slowly, but it really helps with the overall recovery. Good Luck, you will do great! Thats all I can think of for now.

I am being banded on tuesday and I am on Clear Liquids on day one.

Days 2-14 full liquids- strained Soups, yogurt, cream of wheat, softly scrambles egg beaters, applesauce, refried Beans. My dietition said to puree the beans and add some broth to make them runny, looks gross but very filling.

Days 15-28 mushies.... At this point there are many options. I bought a stick blender and look forward to using it.

Anyway I just listed some of what's on my list, hope it helps and good luck.

Something to read...good movies to watch. your prescription pain meds. Lots of Water if you don't drink tap Water. Be sure to follow your doc's diet; unlike jujuvee I wasn't allowed anything but clear liquids for the first week. He didn't even want us having Protein shakes. By the time week 2 came that Protein shake ALMOST tasted good!

Just make sure you have something to distract you. You won't feel like cleaning the closets but shouldn't just sleep either. Comfy clothes are good, too...enough clean comfy clothes so you don't have to do laundry!

I am wondering why you wont be leavng your house??? Did the doctor say you had to stay in? But check with the doctor to get his FULL DESCRIPTION of liquid diet, mine is a lot more than I thought. So base your shopping off of it. Do you have anyone close to visit or pick thing up for you if you need it. You will be in your house so you will have your creature conforts. Good luck.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
