Do you really have to only take "dime size" bites?

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I met with the nutritionist yesterday. My last appointment with the doc is next Friday (3/27th) and hopefully, we will pick a surgery date!!!

Anyway, the nutritionist showed me a dime and said that my bite size had to be the size of that dime! I tried to do that this morning and there was no way I could chew a dime size piece of food 30 times!!!

1/2 a grape dissolved before I chewed it 15 times...:w00t:

Is this the reality? Or is he just going over board trying to get me to take smaller bites (which wouldn't be bad seeing how I can eat a piece of pizza in three to four bites --- I know, gross!)?

Thanks for the advice. :)

Before good restriction....NO. After good restriction...YES If it is a food that is problematic. Took a while to knock that into my thick skull (it's my heritage! LOL) but I've found that, oddly, now that I FINALLY have restriction 7 months post op, it HURTS to eat some foods (like roast, or steak, or chicken) unless I take small bites and chew to mush.

Instead of finding the small bite thing punitive and miserable, though, I don't mind it because it means I can EAT that good roast or sizzling steak that I want. Of course, I don't eat much of it, but I'm happy. I've found it doesn't take a side of beef to satisfy me any more.

So don't sweat it. Until you have restriction it won't really matter and once you have restriction it will help, so it won't be so hard to do.

Exactly what RestlesMonkey said. Once you have good restriction, unless you want to live in pain or over the toilet(if you PB), your bites will be small in order for you to get them down. It does take some getting used to, but as you get more restriction, it gets to be habit. My biggest problem is usually the first bite (first bite syndrome) when I am too hungry. It can be quite uncomfortable. Just take your time. Good luck!

I agree with the previous posters, but most food I eat are not in dime sized bites, but I do take my time eating them. pizza, however, I do eat small bites. I eat 1 piece, and it takes me longer than most people who have eaten 2-3 pieces.

It's a very individual thing. After you start getting restricted, you'll figure it out. Some foods will be different then other ones. It's almost a trial and error thing. But when you error, you'll remember and will start forming your own rules. Absolutely take it slow and easy. Don't test your boundaries until you are fully healed. After each fill, you'll probably test your boundaries again. I reached my boundary on a crab rangoon at a Chinese buffet. Won't do that again!

Thanks for all the info! I chuckle sometimes with the things you guys say here. I always feel so much better after bringing my concern here. I am really hoping for a surgery date soon! Wish I could just get it done today before I get scared again!

Thanks again for the advice.

Yeah, after you've had your band for awhile you won't give it a second thought....taking small bites isn't really an optional thing anymore! I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine finishing a piece of pizza in 3-4 bites anymore! LOL My doctor compared our bites to pencil erasers! And yep, that's about right especially with meats!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
