I have had six months of doctor supervised nutrion counseling and a mental evaluation for GAStic Bypass. I dont want GAStric Bypass.

BCBS is evil... I called before I started all the testing and pre-work to be sure that my company does not have an exclusion - and they said no, no exclusion.

Great. So I did all the tests and put together my file and the coordinator at AIGB called and was told that there IS an exclusion on my company policy.

Right now, I am waiting for my HR person to get a definitive answer, since we can't get the same answer two times in a row by calling...

GRRRRRRR. I'm venting with you, Sister!

Gastric banding is the same thing as the lap band. Go to Inamed.com and pull info from there on the FDA trials. I've also heard good things about them helping people who are being denied by insurance because it's "Not FDA Approved" or "Experimental"

Good luck!

I was approved by Highmark BCBS and they have paid everything 100%. My husband works for the railroad and we have insurance through the UTU (united transpotration union). I was given the same run around, the gastric banding they are telling you they approve is the vertical banded gastroplasty and it is not being done anymore. I appealed and appealed and was denied 3 times. It was going to an outside company and my husbands employer stepped in and I was approved. I was told that when I was approved they were changing the way they viewed the Lapband and it was going to be considered for coverage on a case by case basis, that was June 30th. I am not sure if the system has been updated but it may be worth appealing and going to the outside company or contacting www.obesitylaw.com Walter and Kelly are really great people and were very helpful even though I was too far along in the process for them to help me with appeals, they gave me some great advice and wished me luck. I am willing to help anyway I can feel free to PM me with any questions you may have. ~Mandy

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
