Hello,

I was banded March 15, and something funny happened last night 6 days post op!. I was doing fine all day with my clear liqauids, then at night I had some chamomile tea and went in to my son's room and bent over to tuck him in, when I stood staight again, I felt that nasty feeling in my mouth (the one you get when you KNOW you will vomit) and then I vomitted pure liquid! Why does that happen? I have been fine all week. I thought liquid just rolls through the band??. WHat happenes when I start drinking thicker shakes??

Also, back to the tile of the thread. I have a formal dinner to go to on thursday, and was wondering if any of you gals wore spanx/body shapers so soon after surgery? Can I squeeze myself in or will I do damage??

One more thing, still feeling weird when sleeping on side.. normal??

Danah

The left side under your ribs can be tender a few weeks, if that's the side you are having trouble with. I hope you keep healing nicely! Congratulations on your surgery!

Danah it sounds like you have some restriction with your band from the swelling from surgery. Be thankful, that is a good thing. What probably happened is that the tea was in you "upper" pouch and had not gone down all the way. Even though it is liquid, I can at times, when I am tighter, feel my liquids take a tiny bit longer to go down. When you bent over so soon after drinking it, the tea came back up. If it happens again and you are worried, please call your surgeon to check and make sure.

On wearing the spanx....can't help you there. I have only had two pairs of Spanx and neither fit tight enough to do any good, much less any damage to me. I just don't like them. When I buy the size I am supposed to have they are WAY TOO LOOSE and don't help at all. All I can say is try them on, and if you feel any discomfort at all, then take it off. It sounds like your dinner is almost 2 weeks post op. You will probably be ok, but be careful of pulling the incision scabs.

Oh, and do you really want to go to a formal dinner when all you can have is Soup? Do you have to go? Really think about that before you put yourself in a position to feel uncomfortable not being able to eat ,or worse, giving in to temptation and eating before you are supposed to. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Can't help you with the Spanx question, but I wanted to let you know that I've had similar experiences with the other issue.

I was banded on 03/11. Just yesterday I bent over and skim milk literally flew out of my mouth. I was pretty surprised and it was real gross. I didn't actually vomit - there was NO heaving, it just "came up".

I too am still swollen from the surgery and I guess it just takes longer to flow out of my pouch!

Thanks you all for the replies! I find it amazing that no one wears or wore body shapers! I wear them all the time, and especially to family/friend events, not always to work! I don't want to squeeze too tight though that's all...

crzytchr, about the dinner, It's a huge family event and I only told immediate family about the surgey, so I will "pretend" to be on a diet.. I live everyday with

temptation having to feed my kids and see others eat, so I pray I will be fine.. Just be strong, right? I guess we will always have temptation since this is a long life commitment, why not start now ) Will let you know how I do... maybe I'll sneak in a slimfast Protein shake lol!

Rachel, thanx for the encouragment, hope I do as well as you!

Melissa, sorry but I laughed at the thought of milk coming back up..

Anyone else fit too tightly into a Spanx? :)

yes wear Spanx. if anything it will help you. i had to wear a band around my tummy after surgery for weeks since i was in so much pain. so spanx is the same idea. it will hold you in.

I had pain sleeping on my side for about two weeks after surgery but it got much better as time went on.

Spanx sound like a good idea. It might be a little uncomfortable, if you stomach is sore.

And I hope you have fun at your dinner! I went out with my boyfriend's family for a celebration and it wasn't a big deal that I could only have Soup.< /p>

I had the pain in my side for several weeks after surgery but found if I used a very fluffy pillow and tucked it under my side, it went fine. Mainly because I wasn't fully on my side but still able to sleep sideways. Now I am 6 months post-op and sleeping fully on my belly now.

As for Spanx, love them. I wear them all summer long, just smaller ones now.

Good luck.

I am just now back to the forum and reading messages, but I wanted to comment on the "liquid coming up" issue. I had my surgery on 3/16 and doing fine; however, I had that same thing happen on 3/19. My surgeon's nurse said the same thing.........my tea had not made it's way through the "funnel". That is how she explained it to help me visualize the area.

I hope you are doing fine now.

I agree with the others. The liquid just hadn't gone down yet, because it does go down slowly. It is also easy to trigger the gag reflex or even feel latent nausea the first few weeks after banding.

As far as Spanx is concerned, try it out beforehand at home to see if it will be comfortable enough. It might still be a little early to wear it, but you will know for certain once you give it a shot.

I'm surprised more people don't wear body shapers too! They do wonders. BTW, I find Donna Karan Ultra Toners (or is it Essential Toners -- they are the ones that have control top through the thighs and are plain at the end -- not lacey) hosiery to be even better than Spanx. They are my favorites. I haven't had a problem wearing them post-surgery, but I had a 2-cut surgery, so my scars are higher than where the hose hit.

Danah, the idea of sneaking in a Protein Shake is definitely something you should do. Many, if not most or all, of us have done that before going someplace where there will be food and it definitely does help. You can also put a shake on ice and make it last a bit longer, but it might Water it down too much for you. Good luck to you and enjoy your family dinner!

Hi Danah. I was able to wear spaks 7 days post op for my brothers wedding and I was able to wear it all day as I was in the wedding from 10am to 10pm once ten pm came I had to remove it becuase it was starting to bother me. But it was great. You don't want it to tight just the right size to smooth you out a bit.

I would definitely try out beforehand. I cant stand wearing any type of garment like that, I find them very uncomfortable and I always get a sore back and a stitch in my side.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
