can my band tighten up after being on a plane?

Recommended Posts

Hey Everybody,

I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or knows the answer to my question. Can my band swell up after coming down after a flight. Reason why I ask is because the last couple of weeks I have been doing fine with eating. After I got off the terminal I went to the restauraunt to order a Soup and all of sudden I felt a pain. It was the same pain as if I swallowed a ball and it got stuck. I didn't throw up. I just burped it out. I get confused sometimes with this band. Because last night I ate great. I had salad, chicken, and mac and cheese. I may have eaten more than I should but never like I used to eat before the band. does the band maybe swell up from a big meal before?

I have had flights affect me in this manner. I flew to the middle east and back in November and I can tell you that I definitely PB'd during the flight and after. My band had to be tighter because I was fine before.

There is also a phenomenon called first bite syndrome. If you take a bite or two and then wait five minutes, you can then eat relatively normally. However, if you start eating and don't stop to give your stomach a little time to adjust, something that usually goes down fine may cause you to pb. That is also sometimes the reason that some of us have trouble eating in the morning or feel the need to drink a warm beverage first.

I think it is perfectly normal and I have had the same issues. Not everyone is affected this way, but some of us definitely are.

I flew to Vegas and had that happen. I was tight for a day and a haf post-fight. Very odd... but it DOES happen.

I fly all the time but not yet with the band. No fills yet either. But some of my flights are 18 hours long so I will have to plan accordingly and have Protein Shakes along to get thru the flights and a few days afterward.

I think a lot of people don't have any issue when flying at all. I maintain a pretty tight band, so it probably is more noticeable with a tight band...

That is an excellent point. I should have mentioned that when my band is looser and there is less fill, there is no affect from flying. When I am tight, I feel a definite difference.

kgloverii, you look fabulous. I like the new picture.

Awww... thanks Heather! I still can't wrap my head around my thinness. I see pics and can SEE that I am thin, but looking in the mirror is a whole other story!!! Can you believe you are over halfway to babyland??? I am on pins and needles!

My doctor warned me about this before I flew last month, he said the pressure changes make us tend to retain Water which makes everything puff up a little including the tissue inside the band, which makes it feel tighter. He told me to be prepared to only have liquids after flying if I needed to. I ended up being fine but my band was somewhat loose at the time.

I am by no means an expert. But have some medical flight experience. The bands are filled with saline which gas laws really dont effect in a pressurized cabin. This method is often used to keep different devices inflated during flight in sted of using air on the ground. Air expands and contrants due to different gas laws. So my thoughts are the band itself is probally not effected.

I've been flying as a Flight Attendant for 10 years now. Pretty much everything in the pressurized cabin increases in size. If you take a look at Water bottles, chips etc...they all get extremely puffy during flight. The same thing most likely happens with the band. It should take a few hours for the swelling to dissipate. There's also the issue of dehydration during flight so it's important to sip on some Water and try your best to stay hydrated.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
