Excited, but scared to death

Recommended Posts

Hello, my name is Tammy, and my surgery date is March 24. I have several friends who have gone through this, but I'm still scared. I have never had surgery of any kind. I've never even been in the hospital except for x-rays and other tests.

I tried so many other methods of losing weight, and they worked for a little while, then nothing. I made the decision to have lap-band surgery after much research and soul searching.

I'm ready to begin this journey. I know it won't be easy, but I'm dedicated to doing this the right way. I even made an appt with a counselor to work on other issues, and I've never been to a therapist except for the psychological evaluation for surgery.

I would appreciate any advice, words of encouragement, and prayers anyone can give me. Thanks!

im about 3 weeks post op and i've lost 18 pounds already. and like you i was never really sick or had any major health problems before. and trust me i was terrified. but i feel fine i went back to work after 2 weeks. now im not gonna lie and say its not gonna hurt i was pretty miserable for a few days. but after you start moving you back to yourself fairly quickly. the good thing is you sound to be in pretty good health already and thats gonna help you heal faster. good luck to you and i will definitely say a prayer for your safe surgery and speedy recovery:thumbup:

Hi Tammy

I had exactly the same fears - as probably did everyone on this board. The way I dealt with it all was to put everything into context. Hopefully this will help: Morbid Morbidity - Lap Band Surgery and Lap Band Discussion Forum

The fact that you are catering for the mental issues ahead as well as the natural fears is excellent news! On top of that - you are a woman and not a whingeing man - so the post-op pain will no doubt be a breeze too!

All the best

Ben

Hi Tammy!

I feel exactly the same way. With any luck, I will have my surgery before the end of May. I'm not so worried about pain. Complications are my biggest concern. Especially since I am self pay and insurance won't touch anything having to do with bariatric surgery. I've got a few more questions to ask of the surgeon, but I'm hoping it will all come together neatly.

I've decided to think positively and assume that it will all be okay. I know the risks (just as I'm sure you do) and we have a plan in case those complications happen. One day at a time...

K:smile2:

P.S. good luck on your surgery!!!

Hi Tammy! I was in the same boat you're in when I went into the hospital. I've never broken anything, or even been to the hospital before, so it was a big scary world. My experience, while not super easy (we are getting cut, after all!), was so much better than I was afraid it would be. I spent one night in the hospital and was out by noon the next day. The nurses and doctors were all incredibly supportive and positive and did everything but bring their pom poms to cheer me on. It was pretty sweet.

And if your doctor is anything like mine was, s/he'll give you really good drugs to take home with you.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Hi,

I have been thinking about Lap Band surgery for the last year. A dear friend had the surgery and loves her results.

I am in the beginning steps. I am self-pay and am nervous about the large financial obligation but I've spent more money in weightloss products over the last 9 years.

I've never had a surgery or incision a day in my life. I'm am freaking out b/c my boyfriend doesn't seem to support me at all. Not sure if its insecurity or lack of knowledge about the process but its troubling nonetheless.

If anyone can give me an idea of what to expect the first week, that would be great.

Thanks.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
