rcfancy 0 Posted March 20, 2009 Hi everyone. I'm so glad I found this site. All the comments and atttitudes are so positive. I'm scheduled for surgery on March 30 and go for all sorts of tests tomorrow. I guess I will get pre-opand post-op diet instructions at that time. As I was surfing for more info on the post-op experience, I saw it listed where asparagus is a no-no food. Is that true? Asparagus is my favorite food of all time. Why is it on the banned list? I can understand something like popcorn, but asparagus? Anyway, I look forward to checking back in here and get help and support from this community. I'm glad I have joined already. MacMadame 81 Posted March 20, 2009 No, it's not true. You can eat anything you can tolerate. Some people can't do the more fibrous veggies because they prefer to be tighter, but that's a personal choice. There is nothing about asparagus that would hurt the band or you. MyDay2Shine 1 Posted March 20, 2009 You could ask your nutritionist what they think. Asparagus may be one of those things you just have to try for yourself. I have not found a food that I can not eat, as long as I eat really slow and don't eat too much! I do however avoid high calorie foods that slide right down (like ice cream). Don't know if any of this helps you!? Good luck!
rcfancy 0 Posted March 20, 2009 Whew--glad to know. I see all the posts about chocolate and while I love chocolate I can live without it. Never eating asparagus again?.....I'm not so sure I could do it!!! --Thanks for the responses.
RestlessMonkey 7 Posted March 20, 2009 The ONLY thing I know that is a "no no" is carbonated beverages. Otherwise, where did you get that info? It MAY be a food SOME people have trouble with; but that is not the same as it being a "no no". My doc says we should be able to eat just about anything in smaller quantities. So far, he's dead on. suepro 39 Posted March 20, 2009 I eat asparagus occasionally and it goes down just fine. It is a bit trial and error to find out which food suits your body and which don't. I do find I have to cook my veggies a bit more than pre op and of course I need to chew chew chew.
MacMadame 81 Posted March 21, 2009 The ONLY thing I know that is a "no no" is carbonated beverages. Even that isn't a no-no on every program. I guess it's controversial whether or not it really stretched the pouch.
stevegoad 32 Posted March 21, 2009 I ate asparigus last night - we were grilling chicken outside, and I dropped some fresh asparigus on the grill with it (salt and olive oil first, then put it on the grill, turning it ever couple of minutes until carmalized a bit)... excellent. I guess it's controversial whether or not it really stretched the pouch. that's too great to hear about carbonation because I do like, once a year, to drink a beer or two. And what about Champagne? I may want to Celebrate something sometime! Right now, carbonation hurts me. I've tried a swallow or two and it takes 5 minutes of burping for one mouthful...not worth it yet. BUT I'll keep trying occasionally over the next year or so.
Aries32 0 Posted March 21, 2009 First let me congratulate you on your new journey to lapband. I was just like you going through the list of foods I would probablly never be able to enjoy and was a bit freaked out over brocoli which is my favortie, popcorn, espargus just to name a few. I have been able to eat everything as long as I take my time and chew, chew, chew. prior to my second fill I could eat bread without a problem in the morning. Now after my 2nd fill I can no longer eat bread in the am. I can eat it in the evening. I love my band and I am so happy that i am no longer on diet but on a journey of life syle. Let me report that 35lbs down since 1/07/09 as been so rewarding with my health. I am almost off of my high blood medication. My husband is now completed off of his diabetes meds...Good luck and remember that everyone's experience is different after lapband.
