Getting started, Colostomy and lap band?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! This looks like a great place to get info on lapband. I am a 5 year colon cancer survivor and I have a colostomy as a result(and my life!). I have

I had 3 peristomal hernia repair surgeries. They have all been very intense and difficult. I have another hernia, and need to have it repaired before it turns into emergency surgery(like 2 times before!).

I guess I am looking for other ostomates who may have had the lap band done and how that all worked.

My wonderful surgeon has a doc in his office that is doing lap band work, so I am guessing I could have it done at the same time. Or I am wishing anyway.

I have so much to learn about this, and know I have to have a consult with my surgeon soon, but wanted some knowledge first.

Thanks for any help!

Hey there Denver, welcome aboard. I've not met any folks on here that have an ostomy (besides one woman who has a tracheostomy.....that's not really in the same area that is concerning you, right? lol), but that doesn't mean they're not lurking around somewhere. Sorry I couldn't help, but I just can't stand to see lonely posts with zero replies, so I had to reply.

Oh thank you so much. LOL at the lonely posts! I hope the absence of replies doesn't mean this may be an option for me. I will be seeing my surgeon soon, and I know he will give the the thumbs up or down. A year ago, he thought it could be a possibility, but still recovering from complicated hernia repair, he said to wait a year. A year is up!

Thanks again

A year too late in my reply ... but I have the opposite. I had a band put in a few years and ended up with a colostomy in June 2009. Just had it reversed 5 weeks ago. If you wish more info, just let me know.

Hi

My little bit of knowledge of surgery from my mom about many surgerys-is that you get scar tissue..that prevents the laproscopy procedure from being effective...or they call it a "candidate" - MY mom had a few colon surgerys..then needed her gall bladder out..but since she had the previous surgerys they couldnt' do it laps. so had to go traditional. However...this was not lap band..and she is a lil skinny thing.

I would call surgeons office and ask to speak with NP and see if you would be a candidate based on your history. I am sure they will find some solution...that would work best for you. GOOD luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
