Can I have Caffeinated Coffee Sometimes?

Recommended Posts

I mostly drink Decaf now, but sometimes the coffee houses don't make decaf past noon. Can I have a cup of caffeinated coffee around once a week?

What about caffeine is bad for the band?

Thanks!

I would say to ask your dietition.

You have to ask your surgeon what he allows. Mine (Dr. Fielding at NYU) allows one cup of caffeinated coffee per day, but some feel that it's too acidic or something.

From what my Dr. office said the band does not care about caffeine. They just wanted me to reduce the intake of caffeine but after a week they said I could have limited amounts of caffeine. But I would just ask your Dr. office to be sure because each Dr. is different.

My dietician didn't want me having any caffeine but I told her I just had to have a little bit of coffee in the morning to get the eyelids unglued. She said ok to a cup of coffee and since that time I have had 1/2 cup of regular coffee every morning and it has never bothered me. I was banded in September so I would think if it was going to be a problem, I would have noticed by now. Man (nor woman) should not live without coffee!!!

From what I understand, they really push decaffeinated drinks so that they can count them toward your daily Fluid needs. Caffeinated beverages are diruetics so they do not count toward your fluid intake.

I asked my surgeon. I was told we were to avoid it because "it can be an appetite stimulant for some". There is a tendency in the medical community to shun caffeine when actually they are finding (studies being done) that caffeine in moderate amounts can actually be good for you. Since it does not stimulate my appetite (in fact in some people it DECREASES the appetite) I have coffee with caffeine daily...a cup or two....and I drink unsweetened iced tea with caffeine (about a quart a day). Ask your doc.

My doctor said that up to two cups is okay, of course, none is better. I've never been a caffeine drinker, but this question comes up often.

*I'll add the normal disclaimer: Your doctor's rules may vary, so proceed with caution.* lol

Like others said, ask your doctor.

Mine puts absolutely no restrictions on caffeine. I have basically stopped drinking afternoon, but that is because in the past I switched from coffee to sodas afternoon... so now I switch from coffee to Crystal Lite (or some other brand of that type drink) after about noon. But I have 4 or 5 cups before noon.

Pre surgery I was a crazy diet pepsi addict. Now post surgery, I drink coffee with no problems. A cup of coffee with fat-free flavored Creamer gets me through those crazy hungry times between meals. But I also make sure to get in at least 48 hours of Water every day.

One thing I have learned is that every doctor gives different advice. My doctor told me that it is ok to have coffee :tongue_smilie:as long as I have a cup in the morning and I am not “sucking” on coffee all morning. She wants me to limit the amount I have but I can have coffee everyday if I want . I have also heard that coffee is a stimulator for people’s appetites :huh2: and therefore can cause people to eat more :). I guess ask your doctor and see what his/her recommendations are.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
