Bunny Bandsters - April '09, MASTER THREAD #1

Question - Is a fill every 6-8 weeks for a year the norm???

I think this varies a lot...some here were going every few weeks and were way ahead of me for awhile. My doc says 8, but the scheduling nurse lets me schedule at 6 weeks (I always make my next appt. before I leave).

Hi everyone

Haven't posted in a while. Lisa and I have been busy trying to catch up after the holiday.

Unfortunately, I have some bad news to report. Lisa, who was banded on April 9, has had a serious complication that the specialists believe is related to the banding procedure. Last week she felt as though she had a flu (generalised aches and pains, bad headache, spiking fever, nausea). We took her to the doctor on Friday (10 July) and he sent her straight to the hospital where she has remained since. They found that she has a sepsis (infection in the blood). She was very fortunate that a very experienced physician was supervising that night. The doctors were treating her thought it might be secondary to the flu. They didn't suspect the band because it was 3 months post-surgery and she has had no real problems (except for the initial bad time she had) but the physician ordered a CAT scan to check that it had nothing to do with the band. From the scan, they found that the sepsis is related to three abscesses (pus-filled cavities) in her abdomen (one in the liver, one near the gall bladder and one near her diaphragm). It is very serious. She is having the liver abscess aspirated today and having drainage catheters put in the other two. We're both hoping she starts to feel better soon after that.

Anyway, the bottom line is if you feel as though you have a flu, make sure they do a CAT scan to make sure you don't have anything wrong inside.

Lili, I've been thinking of you two lately and just figured you were busy. I'm so sorry to hear about Lisa's complication. I'm relieved to hear she has the care of some good docs who have figured this all out quickly and will get her the help she needs.

I've never heard of anyone getting sepsis after 3 months except with a band erosion which seems to involve a lot of very site specific abdominal pain. This must be very rare as you said and I'm so sorry this happened to her. Thank you for the information as it may help someone here someday and is certainly something I'll keep in mind.

Please send Lisa our well wishes and let her know we're saying prayers that she'll be turning the corner and getting better soon.

Hang in there Lili. You're a strong person and she needs that. -BG

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the good wishes and prayers for Lisa. Lisa got back from radiology after the CT drainage exercise last night in very bad shape - she was having terrible trouble breathing and nothing (including 150mg Demerol every 3 hours) could take the edge off the pain. They managed to aspirate 300mL (about 10 US Fluid ounces) of disgusting & stinky pus from the abscesses and more is still draining out. I stayed with her overnight as I was really worried that she might get worse and that she'd need to be transferred to the intensive care unit. Thankfully, that didn't eventuate and she seems to be starting to feel a bit better this morning (though she still looks and feels awful). We're hoping the multiple antibiotics she's on will have a chance to work now that much of that pus is gone. Thanks again and I'll keep you posted (hopefully with good news).

JT and BG - your updated avatars are fantastic - you're both looking not just slimmer but also younger. The scales are finally starting to move down for me after too much fun and frolicking in the USA. Lisa has lost a heap of weight over the last week but this is no way for it to happen.

Lots of love to all and thanks again

Lili

Found out today that I should have called the Dr's office the same day I had my first fill (5/21) to make my next appt for 6-8 weeks out. Well, now I have to wait until 8/20. Luckily, I don't have a hunger problem.

Question - Is a fill every 6-8 weeks for a year the norm???

My Dr. have done my fills every 6 wks. and so far he has only put in 2.6cc. He said he will only put in 4cc total, I have a 10cc band. I had my last fill on July 3,.6cc, and if I'm doing as good as I am now, on Aug. 20, I don't think I will go for another fill. I'm going to talk to the Nurse about it. I don't want to have any problems with PB's or sliming, and I am losing so I'm going to just wait and see.

We my Quest to eat somewhat right in Baltimore after my fill continues..... We went to the Inner Harbor and strolled A LOT, it was really fun there was major people watching to do an outdoor concert and kids dressed for a Anime or Comic event. We finally walked in someplace for dinner about 10pm very nice and the menu looked wonderful. I ordered my Soup my choices were french onion or maryland crab got the onion it was full of onion more then any place I'd ever seen. I took most of the cheese off ate the broth and some of the onions. We also ordered crabcakes, they were small, I was able to get most of one down but it was a bit difficult.

What counts is we had a realy good time and got a lot of walking in.....

Hi guys. I've been MIA lately. This has been a really bad three weeks. My ex-husband (my oldest daughters dad) passed away a week ago. It is has been super emotional in my house and the last thing I wanted to think about was my diet. My partner has been worth her weight in gold (platinum really) and we've pulled together beautifully as a family to support my daughter. Today is the memorial service and I'm praying for a lot of patience and grace to support her even more. I have really missed you guys.

Anyway, I am so sad to hear that Lisa is in the hospital and having complications. I hope that she is better soon. Lili, JayTee is right in that you need to take care of yourself too. Please keep us updated on everything.

JayTee, I am blown away. You look gorgeous! I can only hope that I will start loosing weight again. What an inspiration you are to me.

Jerseygirl, you look fab too!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
