WOWOX7 0 Posted March 18, 2009 I am going to europe in May and was wondering if anyone has flown for long distances and if they had issues. My Dr said yesterday that some people have trouble with swelling, but most dont. Was suggested that I be on a liquid diet the day of flying. Thoughts and experiances would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Lois
tapshoes 2 Posted March 18, 2009 In my experience, flights over 35000' and/or of 4+ hours resulted in tightness the next day...so I would be on fluids. Shorter flights have not been a problem.
Nanny2Trey 0 Posted March 18, 2009 (edited) I have flown to Europe twice since I was banded and had absolutely no problems and did not do liquids. I have also flown domestic twice with no issues. WOWOX7 0 Posted March 19, 2009 Thank you both, I may just do liquids to cover myself.
giveyouthemoon 4 Posted March 22, 2009 I have trouble every time I fly, short or small distances. Takes me a day or two to recover. And when on the plane, while in the air, can hardly eat a thing. I had a wicked PB mid-flight in the bathroom on Hawaiian air. I'm sure you can imagine how utterly disgusting it is to PB into an airplane potty. Ugh! Just take it easy. And enjoy your trip!! susan1961 0 Posted March 22, 2009 I just went back and forth to Nairobi, 9600 miles each way. I chose not to have a fill (I was due for one) before the trip. I was maybe slightly tighter, but barely noticeable.
WOWOX7 0 Posted March 22, 2009 Susan, Where are you in your journey? My band is about 75% full. thanks for your response. Lois
BratKat 0 Posted March 23, 2009 I have flown to Qatar, Japan, and Australia in the 16 months since I've had my band. The first trip was just 3 months after. I had no problems with any of my trips. I'm just careful about what I eat, pack a few of my own snacks-Protein bars that go down okay in case the food on the plane is something I can't eat. I avoid the bread on the plane and drink plenty of Water. The only thing special I did was take a needle from my surgeon and my lap-band card with me to Japan in case I had any complications and needed an emergency unfill for some reason. Lap-band is done in the Qatar and Australia so I knew I wouldn't have any problems showing up in a hospital there but Japan is a whole 'nother story!
