Take it out or Tuff it out

Recommended Posts

I have been banded for one year now. Ive done excellent lost 50 lbs. i had 0.2 of a cc put in two weeks ago, that makes 8.6 in a 10 cc band. Im pretty sure it is too tight. Cant hardly drink in mornings. Cant eat more than 3 or 4 bites of anything...... I know it will loosen up when i lose a lil weight.. BUT im wondering will i do damage myself or metabolism. SO tuff it out or take it out??

Well, I'm more of the "take it out" mentality. I've read a lot of stories of people on here that are too tight, and they ultimately eat "bad foods" just to get something down. It's better to eat a slightly bigger portion of nutritious food than to eat a smaller portion of crap, IMO.

Hi,

I'm in the same boat I was banded in Aug of 08 and I have lost about 60lbs. I recently (March 12nd) had a fill and am feeling super restricted can't drink until 11 am or so and I have a shake for lunch and small dinner but still only mushies can't handle solids. I am trying to wait it out to loosen up but I don't want to cause any damage to myself, one good thing is I have lost 8lbs since the fill. :) let me know how it goes.

Good luck

From my understanding it is kinda dangerous to have a band thats too tight. it could promote band slippage or band erosion. are you vomitting at all when you eat? call your doctor and see what he says.

My surgeon said to me there are two methods of weight loss with a band, steady loss eating a healthy diet but smaller portions with exercise, or starvation. No prizes for guessing which method he reccomends.

I was overfilled for a week and couldn't stand not being able to eat real food. If things don't improve why not go back for a small unfill? You don't want to damage either your oesophagus or your band.

Hope you get things sorted out, isn't it amazing what such a small fill can do? .2 is a tiny amount of Fluid.

Your risking everything.

But you know your body better then anyone. Will it loosen back up soon? Or will it only loosen back up when you have starved and lost weight. If it is the latter, I just don't think it is worth the risk. But, .2cc after being just fine, might be mostly swelling? It just depends on how your body reacts.

Heck I can have a fill right now and be perfect, then a week later the swelling goes down, and I'm practically back to normal. I will say that it is getting better with each fill and I can tell I will eventually get to where the filll will last a lot longer.

An adjustment is your best bet. Just get half of your last 2 taken out...1 cc. After a month or so you can always get it put back in.

Better safe than sorry.

I was in the same boat as you about two weeks ago and I tried to tuff it out, but it was so painfull and everything was coming back up, including Water, I decided it wasn't worth it. I went back and had a little bit taken out. I am back to being hungry in between meals but I would rather have that and keep track of my food intake then go through all that pain. I plan on waiting a few more weeks than going in earlier than scheduled for a re-fill. The main thing is you don't want to get dehydrated and end up in the hospital with other complications. Even with an unfill, you won't gain all your wieght back. Maybe a little in the beginning, but you'll stay on track, have faith.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
