Calling All Self Pay People Who Had Surgery In Mexico

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I am self pay. I am looking for a doctor in Mexico, basically because I cannot afford to have in done here in the U.S. Could someone please recommend a doctor and tell me about your experience?

All Replies Are Deeply Appreciated!!:)

LivinWithFaith/KY

p.s. Will U.S. doctors accept you as a patient once you get back in the U.S. and complete your fills and check-ups?

Thanks:thumbup:

You should get a fill/follow up doctor here lined up before you have surgery, I know my doctor won't accept patients who have had surgery in Mexico, too much liability.

Thanks,

I am going to call a local band surgeon tomorrow, to check on that.

I was banded in Tijuana Mexico in March and had a great experience. I would love to talk to you about it more.

I was banded in April in Cancun by dr. verboonen. I have had no complications what so ever. I had my first fill near the end of May. I have only lost 15 lbs, so I am somewhat disappointed, but that may be because I do only need to lose about 80 lbs. Just keeping on , keeping on and not losing faith!

So what did you end up doing about follow up care and fills? I am thinking of going to Mexico and these (+complications down the road) are my concerns.

Dr. Aceves in Mexicali did mine. He and his team are great. They do free fills (except you have to pay about $80 for the xray. They pick you up at the San Diego airport and fromthere on, until return to airport, they take care of everything. You are never on your own. Remember to bring your passport.

Hello,

I was self pay and had my surgery in Mexicali, Mexico in April of this year. I have had no complications whatsoever and the experience was all positive. My surgeon was Dr. Alberto Aceves.

Finding follow-up care was not a problem for me.

I am too far away to consider going back to Mexico for fills or even a post surgical check up.. I live in SW VA and am 5 hrs from any major airport. My complication thoughts, in truth, were ones years down the road, not soon after surgery. Seems as if when there is a rare complication I always seem to get it. I also have a lot of autoimmune issues so I am a little leery. I read, I think on his site that Dr Aceves only does people 56 or younger. Anyone know about that and if it is so?

I don't think it is true. I know of 2 people in their 60's who went to Dr. Aceves for the lap band. Just give Nina at his office a call and ask her.

my dr told me that he absolutely WILL NOT work on patients that have been banded in mexico and if there is a problem you have to pay to travel back to mexico to get it fixed. so in the end youll probably pay more to go back and forth there than the actual surgery in the US

I had my surgery done by Dr. Rumbaut in Monterrey, Mexico and had a great experience. There are photos of the hospital on my blog (link below) -- it was really nice. Also, Dr. Rumbaut has relationships with a few doctors here in NYC (and elsewhere), so I was able to schedule my post-op visits at NYU Hospital (great hospital, great doctors) before I had my surgery.

A few things I really liked about Dr. Rumbaut are that:

- He is banded, so I felt like he really understood where I was coming from and what I would experience post-op;

- He has done more than 6K of these procedures; and

- His staff spent a lot of time with me on the phone answering my questions and helping me coordinate with NYU before my surgery (Cathy in particular is fantastic, and she was also banded by Dr. Rumbaut.

If you are interested, you might give them a call to see if they have a relationship with a doctor near you. Here is a link to their site. Obesity Surgery Center - Dr. Roberto Rumbaut

Best wishes for your decision,

Catherine

So what did you end up doing about follow up care and fills? I am thinking of going to Mexico and these (+complications down the road) are my concerns.

I got quotes from 3 different doctors in my area. I had no trouble what so ever finding someone to do my fills. I found a doctor in Louisville, Ky, that does all the fills I need the 1st year for $700...after that I think the fills will be around $200. I don't expect to need that many fills after the first year.

Also, there are fill centers all over the US, who will do your fills, but it was cheaper for me to go to a local doctor.

Everyone told me before my surgery that no doctors in the US would see me due to liability, but that has definitely not been the case.

Hope this helps and good luck! I do not think I would consider surgery in Tijuana with the Swine Flu, but I feel like Cancun was safe and very effective!!

Can anyone please help me?

I was banded 4/9/09 and I weighed 220. I am 5'4. I got my first fill the end of May 1cc, June .5cc, July .5cc and my current weight is 206. I feel like I am doing something wrong or something. The weight is coming off so slow. Even after having 3 fills, I still do NOT get full that quick. IS this Normal?

I cannot really exercise because I have fibromyalgai (muscle/joint pain) and also have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). The PCOS makes me insulin resistant, so I think that is part of the problem.

I WELCOME any comments about how I could get better on track!

Thanks for ANY COMMENTS!!!!!

Your inability to exercise may be what is slowing you down but at least you are losing. If you continue at your current rate, you will be down around 50 lbs in a year. That is fantastic. i would just hang in there and take delight in the fact that you are losing, not gaining.

You may find that as you continue to lose weight, you may, indeed, be able to begin exercising. Exercise will speed your weight loss.

Given your situation, it sounds like patience will be your best friend. In two years at your current rate of weight loss, you could be down 100 lbs. I think that prospect is worth the effort within your current limitations (which I think will improve over time).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
