Protein and the first 2 weeks

Recommended Posts

I was banded 03/12/09 so I am so new to this. I feel pretty good today. A friend of mine had the Realize but I had the Lap Band. He was told all these exact Protein amts to intake daily and how much of this and that he should do. My surgeon simply advised to be on Clear Liquids for 2 weeks and gave me the lit on the Lap Band. It doesn't even mention Protein Shakes for like 3 weeks into the process. For the past 2 days I had a couple of sugar free popsicles and a small amt of broth. I feel ok but I don't want my hair to fall out or to be hospitalized for not taking in enough. Any suggestions?:)

Hey Ink we were just in the chat room. I have a very good list of foods my Dr gave me. I'm doing the Isopure instead of the shakes for the first week. But if you cant handle the isopure that's cool to do the shakes. You can also have sugar free Jello, clear 100% fruit juice, Popsicles, Gaterade, Decaf coffee, diet Snapple, propel, fruit 20 and Water. He recommended sipping 6oz of liquids for every hour u are awake. hope this help you.

Do what YOUR DOC tells you to do. They are all different. I've ignored my doc's directions because of things I've read here and regretted it. No one would ever intentionally give you the wrong info and much posted here is helpful; but do not go against your doctor's orders because of something you read here!

All surgeons are different and require different things of their patients. Good luck!

Follow your docs instructions. We are here to help each other, but the doc knows how he wants things to progress. We are for shared experiences, good luck.

Of course you need to follow your doctor's instructions, but for the first few weeks on the post op diet, I didn't worry too much about Protein and exact amounts of foods, or even liquids for that matter. You need to drink enough to keep from becoming dehydrated and just focus on healing. You will have plenty of time once your body heals to get all of your protein, and other nutrients in. Just my opinion - I'm not a doctor and I don't even play one on TV. Good luck to you!!!! Becky

:sneaky:Thanks everyone for the advice. I decided to just do what my surgeon advised and leave it at that.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
