Question about drinking liquids

Recommended Posts

I am now 8 days post op. Yesterday I had to get a Fluid IV because I've had Diahreeah everyday since surgery :w00t:. And yes I'm wondering will it ever stop ?

Anyway, I am now drinking as much fluid as possible. When I'm drinking I take small drinks and it seems that the liquid goies straight thru the stoma. Am I correct in assuming this? I have been drinking quite a bit. I don't want to overdo it and cause my band to slip but since it seems I have neverending diahreeah I have to stay hydrated. Example I drank a 32 oz. Power zero (SF poweraid) in about an hour. Is this ok?

So far I have'nt had a whole lot of responses to my questions, I hope that like the Diahreeah will change too.

I had diarrhea for about 2 weeks after surgery. I also got dehydrated and had to be readmitted to the hospital a few days after surgery. They freaked me out by telling me I was only allowed to drink an ounce an hour. When I told my surgeon this she laughed and said that was only supposed to be for the one day in the hospital. I've been drinking like I normally would ever since and haven't had problems. I think as long as you're not chugging it down then you should be fine.

Yeah they freaked me out too. All this don't drink an hour before you eat and don't drink for 90 minutes after and only 3-4 oz. of Water per hour. That comes to like 8 oz. per day LOL, top that off with Diahreeah :w00t:

A person any person should get 64 oz. per day minumum.

Thanks for sharing Steph!

Once you start solid foods you are supposed to refrain from drinking any beverage with your meals. This becomes especially important as you get restriction. If you're in doubt, confirm it with your surgeon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
