I have an appointment for the "weight loss surgery overview" class at Kaiser South Sacramento the first week of April and my BMI is currently 38. I know Kaiser is pretty strict and since I don't have any co-morbidities that I can tell (all my bloodwork came back ok), my BMI should be 40 for me to qualify. So dare I even say it, should i gain some weight?? 10 pounds would put me up to 40 BMI. I feel terrible thinking this but what do I do? Wait another 5 years until I really am that heavy or heavier? Has anyone been in this situation? If so, some advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!!:w00t:

Yes, people do intentionally gain to qualify (isn't that stupid? That's insurance red tape for you)

Some pad pockets with rolls of quarters etc (you get the picture)

I think you have to do what you feel is right. If it were me, I'd be working to gain (for a change)...

It is stupid!! Lol. I know that if I don't, I'll be right back to where I am only heavier. And probably not in 5 years, more like one or two. I just don't want to waste the time and I've been struggling forever - so tired of it. The response you gave makes me feel better and it's nice to know I am not the only one. Thank you so much.

I think I would go for the rolls of quarters myself, although I don't have to *try* to gain weight, which is why I'm hoping to get banded on Saturday as planned! Good luck!

I'm with Kaiser too but my BMI was over 40 with no co-morbs. I would try the quarter thing and wear your heaviest clothes and layer them too. Why put on more weight when you'll just have to lose it to get your 10% off before surgery?

Good luck with your orientation!

I would wear your heaviest shoes too and drink a lot of Water and eat good before your class. I weigh 3 lbs more at Kaiser even with my lightest clothes on and my shoes off than I do naked at home. Good Luck.

I vote against gaining weight just to be approved. What time is your appt? If it is in the afternoon then we normally weigh more then than first think in the morning. Maybe just have a meal just befor eyou go and drink lots. Good luck!

You said you had no co-morbidities and that your bloodwork came back fine. Did you have a sleep study? Did they rule out sleep apnea? What about a pulmonary breathing test? I presume you had all the heart stress tests, etc... If all of this too is negative, then go for the weight gain - it will be the only time in your life that you intentionally wanted to gain weight. Have fun, eat your favortie foods and wear your heaviest clothes. Good luck.

No Vicki J....I wish! I think she may be going to an informative seminar about weight loss surgery before getting her referral to Richmond Kaiser.

I hope someday they have fill centers at our local Kaisers. That would be excellent!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
