:huh2:I haven't given up my diet Pepsi, or my coffee (cafinated, of course!), and I have a question. I understand about having to give up the carbinated drinks, but why the cafine after the surgery? Will it make my liver stay fatty???

Two reasons my doc gave me:

1.) it is a stimulant and can increase your appetite

2.) it can irritate your tiny stomach

My surgeon told me that he temporarily wanted me off of caffeine because of it's diuretic effect. He wanted me fully hydrated for the recovery stage. He was fine with resuming caffeine intake after the first month.

It's far better to wean yourself off of caffeine in the weeks leading up to your surgery. The headache that you will get from going "cold turkey" can be terrible. You don't want that on the day of your surgery or during recovery. You'll have enough issues to deal with, and fighting your caffeine addiction at the same time won't help.

Also, the stimulant effect from caffeine is an appetite SUPRESSANT for most people, it normally won't stimulate your appetite.

From what I have learned it can for some but I wouldn't say most.

For others it can elevate cortisol (stress hormone), it can trigger hypogycemia, it can interfere with the binders of GABA (your "feel good" hormone), and for folks like me it can increase insulin resistance.

my surgeon allows one cup of caffeine post surgery, thank god. he doesn't want us having more than that b/c of hydration issues.

As you can see there are various reasons. Ask your surgeon his/her thinking on the subject. Mine wasn't worried about anything except the appetite stimulation aspect and since it does NOT stimulate my appetite (as I say, apparently one of the few things that doesn't) I did go without caffeine for 2-3 months but now enjoy my unsweetened iced tea and 1 cup of coffee daily.

(FYI Decaf coffee can be as hard, or harder, on the stomach because it is generally more acidic). Find out what your surgeon says and discuss it.

My mom is three months out from her lapband and was told not to drink it for 6 months b/c of the carbonation can affect the pouch size....she said she really doesn't miss it. Not sure *I* will be the same way, but I hope so. We have the same surgeon so I will get told the same thing. Interesting that everyone has different things.........there must not be any hard data on it or something to cause the varying opinions? (kinda like the different pre op diets?)

Most doctors say different things about it, as you can see.

My doc says soda pop is liquid candy and that's why anyone shouldn't have it.

But other than that, he has not told me to stay away from soda or caffeine.

Even diet pop? I know regular pop has lotsa sugar...so that I understand...

My doc said pre op we can have all the diet pop we want...which is what is helping me get through this stinking pre op diet! I DO like the Atkins shakes, tho, and they only have 1 sugar and 2 carbs...

Regular Diet soda has caffeine. They do make Caffeine Free Diet sodas though.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
