Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I know the title to most of the blogs is "is this normal"...but here goes my story:

I had my first fill on Feb 10, 2009 I was banded on Jan 13, 09. Since my surgery date I have only lost 10 lbs. My first and only fill I've had was on Feb 10, and it was a 5 cc fill...yes that's right 5 cc. I have minimal restriction with a 5 cc fill though! Is this normal? I can eat anything if I chew it down well enough. ANYTHING! The doc didn't want to see me for my second fill until April 7, but I called and made my appointment 2 weeks earlier...is this normal?

I feel like I should be loosing more weight, and not as hungry in between meals, with my 5 cc fill I still get hungry...sometimes I'm starving. Can somebody help me? and let me know what I should expect with this whole lap band thing. Everybody that knows I had the lap band surgery looks at me like i should be eating less, and loosing more...

Please give me some feed back, I'm getting discouraged!

ps. You guys are an inspiration for me and I love reading all your stories and encouragement, it gives me hope.

Honestly, the Dr. performing a fill in less than a month's time is not usually recommended. Either way, if you are feeling hungry, talk to the Dr. about it. There could be many variables as to your hunger. Is it really hunger? Are you drinking enough Water, etc. The bottom line is you know your own body and if you do not feel the restriction perhaps you need another fill, but always discuss your questions with your Dr.

Good luck!

Your story was mine for the first 3 fills. After fill #4 my restriction came with a vengeance. AND it was only .5cc's more! Plus it took effect almost 3-4 weeks after he gave me the fill. So you should be paitient after a fill, because alot of the time there is a delayed response. That is why they schedule fills at least a month apart.

I believe I am at my sweet spot now, however, with my hard head I still eat too fast and too much. Once I can regulate the small amount of food I really need, I will be fine.

Good luck!!!

Probably a .5cc fill. What size band do you have. I don't think I would have been able to take a 5.0 cc in my 10 cc bandthe first month, my first fill was at 6 weeks 1.0cc . I was tight after each fill. Lost gradually. I have had 9 of them. Currently have 9cc in a 10 cc band and very tight in the morning till about 11. Excellent!! 14 months out 8 lbs to goal.

Wow, 5cc for the first fill is amazing to me. I have not heard of that before. Do you have a 14cc band?

I had my first fill at 4-weeks post op. I am currently at 5cc with a 10cc band and that was with several fills over a period of time. Although, shortly after a fill I have great restriction, it only lasts for about two weeks. My next fill, on March 17th will be under fluro, as my doctor wants to see why I do not have great restriction ("Sweet Spot").

Anyway, in regards to your situation, I would really hold off on getting another fill. It can take some people several weeks to feel restriction and since you had such a large fill, I would be hesitatnt to get more.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
