JUNE 2009 Lap Band Surgery

Recommended Posts

Band hell is where I'm at, too. No restriction at all since my first fill last week, but I'm doing well controlling my portions and making healthy food choices.

When I was weighed at my doctor's appt last week, I was at a total loss of 20 lbs.... but 14 of that was the first week, so I'd only lost 6 lbs in the next 4 weeks. I was disappointed.... all that hard work for just 6 lbs!? But I finally convinced myself that it was better than nothing!

Interestingly, when I weighed myself yesterday, I was down 10 lbs since last week!! I even double checked on another scale to make sure I was reading it correctly! I was shocked. I am attributing it to the fact that after my first fill last Tuesday, I went on liquids for 3 days (dr's orders). It was like the first week after surgery when I was on liquids and the pounds just flew off. So I think I may try going liquids-only one or two days a week to see if that helps move along the weight loss. I never realized how sloooow this process would be.

I was told by my doctor that as long as I was losing 6-8 lbs a month... I would be doing good.

6-8 lbs a month sounds great to me!! Of course, I would like it to come off faster. Truth is... if it comes off too fast, then I will have a lot of sagging skin (yuck) :D. It the weight comes off slower... it will give me time to exercise and tone :).

I was in a restaurant today. I didn't think I'd been experiencing much restriction but I ate bread for the first time (other than a bite or two in the past.) Pita bread with goat cheese, Tomato, olive and hummus. Also had a little spanakopita. I bp'd into a raised flower bed facing the street (we were seated outdoors) very discreetly. Yuck, yuck, yuck. The nutritionist was right when she said bread can expand in your stomach. I was eating slowly and chewing well and still bp'd. On a good note, my DH and I chewed up the sidewalk in downtown Chicago. I was able to walk and walk and walk. (Thnk about the initial letters in pita bread. Now reverse them and what do they spell?)

Participating in lapbandtalk inspired me to write about on-line community and friendship in last night's blog. IF YOUR STOMACH OFFENDS YOU, TIE IT OFF

Had a few hairy weeks of unrestriction!

Went back from my 2nd fill this am... he checked my level and i did indeed have atleast 4cc's in my band, so he added 1 more cc today so I have 5cc's in a 13cc band. this one went much smoother than the 1st one. i go back in 4 weeks for my 3rd fill, but my NP (Lynn, I love, love her) said if I have another week like I did this week, to call and they will fill me sooner.. So I will try to make it 4 weeks, but have a feeling I will go back in 3...

Still waiting for my insurance company to approve my "port revision" surgery to correct my flipped port. I just got off the phone with the doctors office and they are going to call the insurance company again and told me to call back at 4pm today. I just want to get this taken care of ASAP.

All fine here. Had 2nd fill last week am upto 2.5ml in a 10ml band. Am feeling a bit of restriction but still get hungry especially between lunch and dinner. Weight seems to be sitting on a plateau at the moment so am hoping that will start to drop soon.

Other than that, nothing to report!

I'm dealing with Constipation. Have been since my surgery and I'm sick of it. I'm trying to add some Fiber but not stretch my tummy with expanding fiber that might cause me to bp the way the pita bread did. I called my most recent blog: Getting Rid of the Crap. You can read it at IF YOUR STOMACH OFFENDS YOU, TIE IT OFF

@ifyourstomach... sorry about your Constipation. Mine went away about two or so weeks post surgery. Drinking at least a half gallon of Water a day?

@elcee... I'm at 4ccs and going to geta fill tomorrow before I go on vacation. I went to a wedding two Saturdays ago and even though I tried to be careful, shot up four pounds. I am only now dipping back below my pre-wedding 236. I was really bummed. Ergo, I got an appointment for an "adjustment" with Lorraine Thursday. I need to get some restriction happening before I start firing up the bbq for the kids.

I had my first fill today. I have a 10cc realize band and I got a 4cc fill, per my surgeon's protocal. Next fill in 3-4 wks. I told my md i hadn't lost weight in 4 wks and he said I was doing perfect. Healing very well, jogging and walking, staying below 1100 calories and for me not to worry over it. I guess I will calm down and not be so hard on myself. The weight will come off in time w/ me doing what I am.

Hey guys,

I thought I'd let you guys see a little of what I accomplish with God's help as a teacher of at-risk students on the South side of Chicago. This is a video of one of my students who has an incredible story. I taught him to read and do math and you'll see me teaching him in the video. I helped interview him but you won't hear his voice.

One of the reasons I had the lap band was so I wouldn't have to retire early from a job where I can make this kind of a difference.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
