How long before we can start exercising?

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 2 of mushies and I am feeling so much better today (not perfect, but definitely better)... I am really feeling motivated and I want to get to the gym and get back into a routine. How long should I wait?

I was told no strenuous lifting or abdominal stress for six weeks but to otherwise keep active and listen to my body so as not to overdo it.

The same with me, they told me I could start walking at my one week post op check up and I had to respond that I was already walking a mile a day because it had been told to walk to decrease the gas problem so I walked a lot. The Dr decided that was ok but to still restrict lifting to 25lbs. I lifted a 24pack of sodas for the office yesterday and climbed into the back of the office van and pulled my stitches (nothing pulled out just stretched them a little) so I was sore last night. I learned a lesson for sure. I won't do that again for a while. But still went for my walk... Maybe a longer one today...

Always speak to your doctor regarding release to exercise after surgery. Your doctor will have specific instructions tailored to your health needs. However, most doctor agree walking is great exercise after WLS.

In regards to walking after surgery, I was required to do this immediately after surgery. It was indeed a slow pace, but I felt good about it. And every day I increased by walking.

By week three post op, I was on my tread mill and doing a more extensive workout routine. At the same time, I included hand weights for upper body workout.

Good luck on your journey!

I was told 4 weeks, but as others said, listen to your body. I'm on a curling team, I started back at 4 weeks, had problems with sweeping irritating my port site. At 6 weeks all was well. I just started back at the gym 2 weeks ago.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
