Why huge plateaus after banding??

Recommended Posts

MamaJava - I'm just recently banded, so I'm no pro at this yet. After reading your story and how hard you've worked and with no signs of progress I can say I honestly feel for you.

Here's a couple questions I have for you:

1. Are you taking any medications that could halt your weight loss? Some medications make you gain weight. Maybe by working so hard and instead of gaining weight, your maintaining your weight.

2. Have you had your thyroid checked? I've heard that thyroid problems can halt your weight loss. Go see your doctor and ask him/her to check for thyroid or any other conditions that could stop you from losing weight.

I hope this helps. Again, I really don't know what I'm talking about - it was just a few thoughts that popped into my head.

Don't lose hope - Best wishes!

I have gone through just what you are several times throughout this journey and I just don't obsess with it. Try to not weigh yourself for a whole week and I bet you will see a pleasant surprise!

Barb,

That is good advise. I find weighing myself every day can be really annoying!

I will stay at the same weight sometimes for a week or two, maybe even gain a little..then all of a sudden there will be a good 2 or 3 lb. drop when at the right restriction.

Thanks for reminding of of that Barb.

Boy I could have started this thread too. I have been at the same weight pretty much for over 5 months. I haven't exercised much (bad knees) but still I should be swimming or bike riding I guess. I can't complain because I have forgotten the main bandster rules. I have enjoyed the loss of half my weight and think for some reason that rest should just magically fall off. But I still like the band because without it I would have gained it all back by now. It's time for a small fill and recommit to the bandster rules.

SueAZ, I noticed our stories are similar too. Except I'm exercising like crazy & haven't lost anything in months. Still thankful for the band though, cause I would have gained it all back by now. Going for a fill this afternoon & hoping it will be just right because I either don't have restriction or I'm too tight.

I could take what you just said here Sue, and put my name at the bottom. I've lost ~ 70 lbs. (keep gaining and losing the same 5 lbs. over the past 6 months), which is just a little more than 1/2 of what I want to lose. I'm trying to get refocused and recommitted. I see others who were banded around the time I was who have lost more weight than I have and it's really hard.

I think this is a great support site and through encouragement, we can all help each other.

I heard by taking Vitamin B complex would accelerate your metablish. Have you ever tried taking it everyday? In addition, I think only weigh youself once per week is a good idea. So you would not frustrate yourself out everyday.

That's one of the reasons I keep coming back to this forum. So many of us have similar experiences and it is SO NICE to know I'm not the only one. We can face the fact that most of us slip up from time to time. But the sucess of many keeps me motiviated. And at least I haven't gained it back. (Big Sigh)

I know, that's how I feel too. I don't know why I do it, but it just seems like lately I've been fighting the band. I know it's there to help me, but it's like there is a little devil on my shoulder saying 'go ahead, eat the Oreos, they go down easy...' I read somewhere that when you eat (what you should be eating) and you start to feel the discomfort, that's the band working and we should welcome that instead of fighting against it.

I'm trying to get back on track with baby steps...just tracking all my Water (along with trying to drink more) and writing down everything that goes in my mouth, good, bad or ugly, it's getting written down!

I knew the band wasn't a magic bullet, but I guess I didn't count on having to work this hard for this long!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
