I am going to a seminar this week for banding and was hoping to have the surgery soon. I just checked insurance requirements and they require the 6 month physician supervised program. Has anyone ever heard of this being waived. I am 44, BMI of 40 with diabetes, high blood pressure and arthitis and am a breast cancer survivor. Statistics show obesity can affect recurrence of cancer. I have MDIPA insurance which is United Healt Care. Thanks for any answers.

Never heard of it being waived...but my info is limited to reading posts on this site. I'd suggest starting the requisite 6-month supervised diet thing while you research it....that way if they do waive it, no harm. If they don't, at least you'll be progressing.

It's really suprising how quickly the 6 months can go and if you've been seeing your Dr. regularly and notes about weight and diet have been made on your chart you may have a few months over already. Just make sure from now on you see your dr. on a monthly basis and have notes put in about your weight loss attempt. I made the mistake of skipping a month after my initial visit to my pcp and it would have post poned my surgery by a couple months but I switched insurance in the proces and they didn't reauire back to back weighins.

Bottom line start now if youhaven't already and do not skip a month that starts it all over for many. Good Luck

I don't think they will waive it - but it really does go by faster than you think.

Just start now and keep going faithfully every month.

Good Luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
