Each therapist will perform the evaluation differently. Some will talk with you, asking questions to be sure you are of sound mind. They'll discuss your reasons for having the surgery and what your expectations are. Others will have you take a written personality test. Another may do both.

I was the lucky one! I had a 90 minute therapy session and I returned a few days later for a personality test, which took about an hour.

The personality test is a series of questions with multiple choice answers. Questions like:

Do you love your father

Have you ever thought about suicide

If you were an artist, what would you paint

Do you like fixing door hinges

Have you ever heard voices

Most of the questions will make you think, huh? what? are they kidding?

Whatever you do, don't tell the coulselor that you binge eat, or eat when you're anxious or depressed, as they will see emotional eating as an issue that will not be resolved by having a lapband. Assure counselor that you see the lapband as a tool to assist you in acheiving your goal of becoming a healthier person, and not an end-all cure.

You'll do fine! Use common sense and just answer the questions to the best of your ability.

It is very easy, I just had my on Wed. They get into your family history and why you are over weight. What all you have tried as far as diets. I was asked to role play so they could find out exactly how much I knew about the surgery and before and after care.

My husband just wanted me to find out if I was crazy or not. LOL

As far as questions about thinking about suicide should you answer those questions honestly? I ask only b/c well I attempted suicide in the past, I did a psch eval after and everything was good. I know its not in my medical records because at the time I didnt have insurace, I guess what I really what to know is if I should even mention it? I am definately not the same person I was then.

Dee Dee,

I would never put that out there. The Dr. might view you as unstable. But who knows.

Thats what I thought, I don't want to be viewed that way because I'm far from it, but I also don't want it to come back and bite me in the butt.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
