6 wks post-op had first fill, question about water

Recommended Posts

I am 6 wks post op and had my first fill yesterday. The doc numbed the area first then stuck the LONG needle in on first try, no xrays, just feeling around. My question is this...when he went to do the fill he had me drink a cup of Water, 3 gulps and then he started to pull the saline out and told me to tell him when the water went down. I guessed at it because I really couldn't feel the water go down??? I am okay today, I really don't feel any different, is this normal. When they gave me the water it was full of ice, I guess so you can feel it better, but no such luck. I didn't tell the doc this. I had no fill during surgery, just got 1cc put in yesterday, on full liquids for 2 days then mushies, then slowly to soft foods. I wonder if I will feel the difference once I go to the food? ????? MY next appt is in 4 weeks.

When I've had a fill in the office, and not under fluoro they do the same thing with Water, and I have always had trouble really feeling whether it was going down or not. However, this las fill, when the NP put in 0.6 cc, I could feel the water all the way up to my throat. She pulled 0.2 cc out, and it went down (I already have 8 cc). She said that I would have been back the next day for an unfill had I left with the water up in my throat like that.

You really don't have very much saline in your band now, and although it could be all you need, there's a good chance you'll not have a lot of restriction. Everyone is different when it comes to the amount of fill that gets them to good restriction.

My doctor doesn't do it exactly that way. He said he can tell when we approach the green zone by how hard it is to fill/unfill us. He always has us drink Water AFTER the fill. Believe me; you'll know if it doesn't go down!

Yeah, my doc had me drink some Water after the fill, too.

I have never heard of having you drink water, then to remove saline until it "drains." I had my first fill a few weeks back and got 4 cc's... I feel like I can take a little more!

I am now going into my 2nd day post-op and it seems that everytime a take a sip of Water I feel and hear a faint gurgling sound of what I assume is the sip of Water going through the little hole. It's not particulary a good feeling but not too bad.

Has anyone else had this experience and if so does it stay like this?

LOL! I thought I was the only one who could hear that, since I've never seen a post that mentions it!

Yes, sometimes I can hear my upper pouch draining into my stomach. Sounds a little like a sink draining!

I don't think I've ever heard Water going thru my band, but sometimes I can feel it. I kind of like it, because it's my little message that my band is there and working, lol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
