Beginning the Lap-Band process in Alabama

Recommended Posts

I am just beginning on my lap-band journey, and I am very excited about it. I have struggled with my weight for years and never even heard of this procedure before stumbling across this webpage a couple of weeks ago. I have PCOS and have been looking for treatment for that. Lap-band was one of the overwhelming treatments I found for PCOS when doing my internet research. I had my seminar last week, and my first Dr appointment yesterday. I have to have a sleep evaluation (because I snore) and I have to go to 7 consecutive months of Dr-supervised weight-loss visits because that is what my insurance requires (BCBS of AL). How much weight can you lose during those 7 months and still have insurance approve the surgery at the end? :cursing: I hate that I have to wait so long to get started with the band!

It depends. But if you drop below a 35 BMI (with co-morbidities) some insurance companies will deny you because they say you no longer meet the criteria. If you have no co-morbidities (and most insurances don't count PCOS, unfortunately), then don't drop below 40 BMI.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
