Acid Reflux and Ibuprofen

Recommended Posts

Hello all...need some input. I have been experiencing a lot of acid reflux since my last fill in November. I went in December for a slight unfill and my doctor told me acid reflux only happens when you are too tight. It continues and it has woken me up in the middle of the night several times. I'm not too tight and would like to get another fill at the end of this month, but the reflux concerns me. I'm tired of eating tums to soothe the problem. I have an appointment with my PCP tomorrow and am going to talk to him about it but wanted to know if other surgeons said reflux was caused because you are too tight. I feel sneaky talking to my PCP to help alleviate this situation, but I'm tired of dealing with it.

Also, I have read that you are not suppose to take Ibuprofen on this board but my doctor never told me that. Does anyone know the reasoning?

As always, thanks for any input!!

The reason we arent supposed to take ibprophen is that it can increase the chance of erosoion of the band into the stomache.

I just asked my lapband doctor about Advil last week (I suffer from terrible migraines) she said to try and limit Advil it can cause ulcers. She said that if I do need to take Advil take a Pepcid AC along with the Advil to help coat the stomach.

The only time I have had acid reflux with the band is when I was overfilled. I had them take some out and it disappeared. You may want to try getting some more taken out, even though you feel like you need a fill. Actually some people get the band that have severe acid reflux to solve that problem. So you really need to figure out why this is happening. Like the poster said previously ibuprofen(?) can erode the band. But I take prilosac daily because I have to take naproxen every day for my Migraines and my joint pain. Certain insurance companies pay for the prilosac, mine does. So my doctor says as long as I take the prilosac before hand there shouldn't be a problem. Good Luck and let us know how everything goes.

I wanted to thank everyone for their responses and give you an update. I went to my PCP today for my reflux issue and he said he definitely believes it is band related. He said it is not something that just began, but something that has been ongoing and it builds up to get to that level. He said anytime you mess with your anatomy things happen. He wasn't sure if it was because I was too tight, but definitely thought it might have started because of that and then just escalated due to the irritation and that's why I can't get it to go away. He put me on some acid reflux medicine and I will follow up with him in 3 weeks. I also have an appointment with my surgeon in 3 weeks so we will see what happens. Thanks again for your input!! I hope this helps someone else - don't wait to get that heartburn/reflux issue checked out, it can do a lot of damage!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
