Lap Band and your family

Recommended Posts

Hi, my husband had lap-band surgery a few weeks ago, and I have discovered that his surgery is greatly affecting me, too! I was just wondering anyone's thoughts on how the lap-band has changed their family life, particularly at the dinner table??

I had the surgery in Nov and have lost 35.5. My hubby has lost 11 without surgery . There is no junk food in our house and he is eating what I eat just more. We are both getting healthy

Well, Personally since I was always the one having to figure dinner out and cook before - my husband has to fend for himself now. It is a little joke in our family.

But I work my ass off all day at work, make way more money than he does..I figure he can't have EVERYTHING perfect...

But, I will cook for my son though

My DH, is happy with me having the band and although he doesn't get everything he wants now (like a home cooked meal every night) he is VERY happy I did it.

As for eating out, he thinks it is a hoot that I am such a 'cheap' date (I kinda think it is funny too)

I've lost 23.5 lbs in the last 7 weeks since my lapband surgery. My husband has lost some weight too, about 5-6 lbs. I drag him out to exercise with me and we've started cooking at home more. It's been a great time and he's so proud of the progress I'm making.

My family hasn't changed much. I still make the same meals I did before the band for my 2 sons and husband. I eat what they eat, just less. I don't think they remember that I even have the band. I've never restricted what foods were in the house. I just try to stay away from them as much as possible. Ice cream is the one thing I try not to buy, unless requested. One of my downfalls. Good Luck with your husband and your dinners!

I am not married and do not have any children, but I often eat with friends and family. I eat what everyone else eats, just much smaller amounts! When I go out to eat I order off the child's menu. When having home cooked meals, I just eat what everyone else eats! This has not been an issue at all for me :).

It hasn't changed our meals etc, we both still cook, we both still eat regular food. The only change is that I use a small plate and go really slowly, DH uses a big plate and can finish his plus sometimes a 2nd serving while Im still chew-chew-chewing the first!

It really has not changed much in are family at all. I still cook and I eat most of the time what they eat, just less with a smaller plate. I also sometimes find that I can't eat when my family eats so I sit there. I have 4 kids and if they are not all sitting still and eating I find that I am trying to deal with them and forget to chew and then get something stuck.

The economy has been the biggest changed for us. I have to think twice about going to wholefoods and buy salomon, tuna fillets. I don't buy junk because it can really eat into your food budget.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
