close to surgery date

Recommended Posts

hello all

I have already had the EGD, psych consult, sleep study, blood work etc...I have my nutrition consult today and then I will meet with my surgeon to set the date. The business office feels like they can get an approval easily. I have Blue Cross HMO, so we will see what happens. I still have to attend a life skills work shop next week and then I hope I am all set. My BMI is 41 so I have a ways to go.

Is it realistic to plan to be back at work in 2 weeks? I am in sales and drive a good deal? Has anyone out there had any problems with Blue cross?

So far my biggest challenge is trying not to drink with my meals. Hopefully that won't be so difficult after the banding

Sounds like you are well on you way! Your BMI is about the same as mine was at surgery.

I was able to drive fairly comfortably after about three days, although the seatbelt had to be adjusted so to not rub the incisions and getting in and out of my car was a bit uncomfortable. I felt pretty good after one week. I would say that barring any complications, if you do not have to do any heavy lifting, you will be just fine in two weeks.

The drinking thing seems pretty difficult at first but it is mainly habit and once you break the habit it isn't so bad. The biggest thing is to make sure you do not have a drink within reach while eating. Honestly, after about a week I was fine with it....I don't give it much thought at all now.

Thanks for the response, I am glad to hear you were able to get over the beverage hurdle. I keep hearing about presurgery diet, my dr hasn't mentioned that yet. How soon did you start on that. Wow, it looks like you have had tremendous success!!

I had to do two weeks liquid Protein prior to surgery. Two weeks liquid post-op then two weeks mushies. But many surgeons have different requirements.

Yes, I have done great with the help of the band. It is truly the best thing I have ever done for myself; I hope for the same with you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
