Band erosion and Caffine...

Recommended Posts

I saw a reference to caffeine eroding the band twice in threads over the last year or two. However, the person that mentioned it did not back it up with any medical evidence or state that it came from their doctor . . . it was like heresay and I didn't take it seriously at all.

My doctor said caffeine is perfectely fine, but like everything else in life, it should be used in moderation. A cup or two a day should have no significant ill effect . . . a pot or two a day is a different story.

Also, if you think about it, if you are following the bandster rules of not drinking for a certain amount of time before or after meals, when you do drink, the caffeine is just washing relatively quickly through your stoma. Unless you have a blockage or are eating at the same time, it is not going to sit there long enough to have much of an impact.

I really think caffeine being specifically linked to erosion is erroneous information to be taken with a grain of salt.

I was told by my doctor that caffine aides in dehydration. That was the major reason for not having the caffine. As for the carbonation from pop stretching your stomach, think about it if it produces gas then that takes up space and can stretch your stomach. Case in point shake up a bottle of pop and see what happens.

It is all junk speculation unless there is a credible study done.

Show me the JAMA baby!!

I would love to read that study.

coffee is acidic so sitting there on your stoma could, potentially cause issues. That said, you'd have to probably drink a lot of coffee.

Also, caffeine can play hell with your insulin, and given how we can only eat small amounts, best to keep your insulin level optimal for weight loss.

Unless you have blockage or your band is TOOO tight I do not see how it is possible for any liquids to "sit in your stoma"....

Our bands provide us with a small drain if you will....and liquids go down the drain quickly...hence the reason we are supposed to eat solid foods after the healing process verses liquids and sliders...or atleast this is whatI have been instructed by my Dr.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
