Is anyone else not on one? My doc said I didn't need to loose weight before surgery so I don't have to be on one. Anyone else the same way?

My surgeon's office does not require it. Although, they strongly suggest to start, progressively, changing your diet to post op.

I believe the liquid diet is to ensure that the liver is lean enough for surgery. My surgeon's office has had very few incidents where they could not continue the surgery due to a fatty liver. __________________

My surgery is the 26th and I'm on a liquid diet until then. He wants us on it for 2 weeks prior to surgery and then I go on Clear liquids ONLY 2 days before surgery which should be lots of fun. It's not AS uncomfortable as I thought it was going to be but it isn't fun either.

Sorry for bogging in on the March thread - I am an April Bandster - but because I am the 2nd of April, I have started my pre-op diet today - and not many in my April group have started theirs yet - and I need some support!!

This diet is AWFUL! I am on Optifast and I am starrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrving!! and it tastes GROSS!!! I have no idea how I will stomach this for two weeks!!!

please tell me it gets easier

I am on my pre op diet, too --- mostly yogurt, sf Jello, and Protein Shakes. I like the Atkins Advantage, tho, so I don't mind them - and they stave off the hunger well. We can do it - just focus on your goal! My friends who have had the surgery said the pre op diet is the worst part of the whole process.

OK, I admit it, I was supposed to start yesterday and I didn't. Now Im scared, maybe Im not ready. I just can't do it:sad:

What kinds of stuff does your pre-op diet include? I've been on mine for a week and it includes cream Soups, Jello, pudding, popsicles...low fat/sugar free. I still have another week of it. Actually as of next Tuesday, I go on Clear Liquids only.

It's not lots of fun but it's managable...I promise. You can do it. Once you get started it'll come easier. It'll be over before you know it.

Hang in there!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
