Help...surgery 3/4..liquid diet?wht to buy

Recommended Posts

I went to GNC and am using their Isopure Protein Powder line and that appears to cover the requirements of the liquid diet as well as being low or zero carb. They also have clear liquid Protein Drinks from the ISOPURE line. The price is high about $45 a container of powder if a gold card member at my store. Taste has been great if mixed with milk (choc, val, cookie and cream) and fruit flavors mixed with Water. Been on them for almost 2 weeks and still enjoying them (miss chewing so I use sugar free gum) Tried Unjury as well, taste was about the same and the same results with the milk and water mixes. The unflavored mises well with meat flavoring like chicken or beef.

I know some people love them, but the fruity Isopure drinks made me gag; I couldn't drink them (and still have $50 worth of them in my cupboard!). So I'd suggest trying one first, before you stock up. ;-)

Imagine brand has really great creamy veggie Soups that are low cal/low carb, and organic (I think)—they come in cartons, similar to chicken broth. I got them at whole foods, but just saw them on the shelf in my regular grocery store the other day (in the "natural foods" section). They are really delicious, and saved my life during the pre op liquid stage.

Good luck!

Valerie

I have not tried the clear liquid Isopure drinks yet because I am not on the clear liquid part of the diet yet. I think that will only be a day or two after surgery. The taste like I said was OK with milk but I agree with Valerie when it is mixed with Water.< /p>

Personally I liked the Carnation Instant Breakfast with no sugar added. Also get yourself some fat free milk to thin it out...both are rich in Protein so having that every day will keep you strong.

I also bought myself some chicken stock...and actually I got some chicken broth from the Chinese restaurant (only broth, nothing else in it). Also, get yourself some of your favorite tea. All of the broth and tea really helps with the swelling i think, and also with the gas you're going to have.

For that, you should also have a heating pad. Also buy some Gas-X for the bloating, and have your Vitamins on hand--they will help with healing.

Other than that, I wish you a speedy recovery!!

I really like the Atkins shakes and they come in lots of flavors. Chicken and beef granules not cubes were great too. My absolute favorite was Campbells Soup at hand, the creamy Tomato or tomato parmesean bisque. V8 also makes some creamed Soup in a box that are good. I did the squash and pea soup. Both were very tasty. Best yogurt I found was Fiber one Key lime pie. YUM! Good luck. THe day is near!

Good Luck. I drank Isopure Liquids, good flavor assortment. Now I just tried Muscle Milk Lite to add Protein daily. I had lapband surgery on 2/2/09, four weeks ago. I am waiting for my first fill as I am hungry and felt I needed extra protein. I eat fish every nite with

spinach or veggies and am satisfied. Hope when I get my fill I will not feel hungry again, but thats hoping. Again good luck. I feel great and keep positive attitude and when people ask me how I feel, I say GREAT, cause I do.

Here is something I found online. But as always follow your own doctor's orders.

Ellen Sweeney Cordes, RD, Registered Dietitian at the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania, responds:

A full liquid diet consists of foods and fluids that are liquid or liquefy at room temperature or body temperature. Foods allowed on this diet include milk, plain ice cream, strained cream Soups, fruit and vegetable juices, hot cereals, plain puddings, pasteurized eggs, and all items on the clear liquid diet (i.e. clear juices, clear soda, broth, jell-o). The full liquid diet is used most often post-operatively as a progression between the clear liquid diet and solid food. It can also be provided to patients who are severely ill or who have difficulty swallowing and/or chewing solid foods. The diet consists of many milk or dairy products but can be modified to include lactose-free products for a lactose-intolerant person. A Full Liquid diet food list is below which may give you more ideas for foods to feed your father.

Foods Allowed

  • Milk : milk, milk shkes, eggnog, instant breakfast, yogurt
  • meats and other Protein sources : cooked eggs, custards, egg substitutes, puddings, ice cream
  • Breads, cereals, grains : refined cooked cereals such as farina and cream of wheat
  • Vegetable and Fruits : Strained fruit juice or vegetable juice (no pulp), fruit Nectars, pureed fruits (similar to baby food), mashed white potato diluted in cream soups
  • Fats : Butter, cream, margarine
  • Desserts : cornstarch puddings, custard, Gelatin, plain ice cream, sherbet, fruit ice, plain frozen yogurt, popsicles
  • Miscellaneous : carbonated beverages, cocoa, coffee, instant breakfast, Ensure, Boost, bouillon, broth, strained vegetable Soup, strained cream soups with pureed meats, sugar, honey, Syrup, hard candy.< br />

Hey there...I too will be banded on the 4th! I'm the first surgery of the day!! Me and the hubby went to sams and stocked up on chicken stock, gatorade, yogurt, and soy milk. I also found a pretty yummy Protein powder from my local organic store thats low in carbs and calories but high in protein...i think its called Spiru-tein...I mixed it with 1% milk and it was pretty good to me. My doc has said that I will be on full liquids for two weeks so I have also gotten a few cans of the cream Soups and plan on using my blender often! I'm nervous but soooo ready. This site has been great to get ideas! Hopefully you have tried a few things out and found what tastes good to u...good luck and I'll be praying for u!

I was actually given a web site to buy the Medifast shakes. I found the already made ones SOOOO much better than the ones you would mix yourself. A little costly, but then everything is when it comes to this surgery! Another one was something a friend of mine got at Vitamin Shopp and it was called Jay Robb whey Protein mix. Very good and not real gritty. Also, Target and Kmart have mini blenders that you can take to work with you. The blender part is actually a cup with a sippy lid that you just put on the base, mix and can keep on your desk or drive in the car. I think it is by Hamilton Beach. Good luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
