For the ladies only: How many of you had

Recommended Posts

female problems after surgery? Specifically, how many of you got a terrible period especially those of you who were done with that. I have taken the depo-provera shot for at least 15 years because of heavy bleeding problems combined with a bleeding ulcer (that equals anemia). I never get breakthrough bleeding except during EXTREME stress like a death or Mom being very ill. Guess what - I've had one for one month straight now and I don't mean just spotting. Insurance won't pay to get my next shot early so I have to wait this out. I've talked to other people who have had weight loss surgery and found out this was common but that's a small sampling. Just wondered how common it really was and think docs should warn us to get stocked up on supplies because it's a possibility. One person told me she hadn't had a period in a year and boom! Also, people need to be prepared. If someone hasn't had one in a year, they might think they are past the worry of having babies. I would think that if your hormones kick in that they need to be informed.

My regular doc thinks this could be contributing to me losing nothing after the first week.

Someone please tell me this does not go on forever!

I'm going to have to look into that. I've been on depo for a little over two years and hadn't gotten my last shot, due about two weeks ago, because my surgeon was concerned about blood clots. My bf and I are abstaining until we can get back on it, but I don't want my period! I haven't had it in a year and a half.

Good luck. I know everyone feels your pain.

Is it possible that it might have to do with the blood thinners that they give you in the hospital? I have to give myself Lovenox injections everyday for a week after surgery.

The only thing I experienced was I went into surgery after starting my cycle. I started on a Friday and usually I am on for 4 days. However, I lasted a full 7.5 days this time and it was like niagra falls. I think my body was truly cleaning itself out- all those liquids/fasting. But that was it.

I didn't think about the blood thinners. I only had the one before surgery because I don't have any history of them in my family. Just interested to see what people have to say.

I didn't have anything heavy like what you've got. I did start bleeding mid-cycle and it lasted until my normal period would have ended...

I had simply awful PMT and periods for quite a while, accompanied by a lot of truly horrendous bowel symptoms (pain worse than labour), starting around 9 months after surgery and lasting about 9 months.

Turned out, I'd suddenly developed endometriosis, it was all over my bowel, had a laparoscopy and its fixed 90% of the problem. Doc thought probably hormonal disturbance caused by weight loss after a lifetime of normal, trouble free periods (but both my sisters have endo) but its entirely I wasnt on any contraception as I'd had my tubes tied at 35 after my daughter was born.

Periods have definitely remained heavier - I had SUCH light ones, 2 days bleeding that was barely more than spotting, and are much more "normal" now, not remarkably heavy or anything, but just more than they were. But the pain and bowel issues have settled.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
