Dr supervised diet in Ontario

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I hope this does not turn into a long post but I have a feeling... yikes!

I went for my physical back in Sept and my GP suggested I do the wls due to my 35.5 bmi with several co morbidities after losing a lot of weight (35lbs) already on my own. I went to a doctor that is supposed to be a weight loss specialist (thinking I was going for a consultation with a surgical program). I was pretty much handed a cookie cutter diet dependant on diet bars and diet Cookies and tv dinners. I am lactose intolerant all the diet products (he sells) have milk product in them. Im allergic to peppers and most prepared tv dinners have them hidden in them. I also have GERD and all the tomatoes and veggies with very little Protein (6 oz ) daily has my stomach torn to bits. Realistically I am ingesting about 750 cal a day right now and I am only on my 3rd weigh in today! This is not going well and he really has had no solutions for my special diet concerns. I am angry and frustrated and I dont understand why I am being asked to do this when I have already lost on my own a good 35lbs before I got stuck.

Can anyone tell me if this is standard in Ontario to put a client through this? He is talking about me being on this for 6 mo to lose 50 lbs just to get to be overweight??? I really do not want to waste my time with another set me up for failure diet plan. I don't want to live on diet bars oops Meal Replacement bars and Cookies the rest of my life. My first week I lost 5 lbs, second week 0 because I took 4 doses cough Syrup and it looks like this week I have lost 7lbs but will find out for sure today. Every Fiber of my body is telling me this is not a realistic or healthy plan.

So now that I have ranted... can anyone give me a break down in procedures for what OHIP expects a patient to do to qualify for surgery? (Im looking to do gb or ds and yes I know this is a lapband site as I have not ruled it out totally) Has anyone else experienced this? Im at a loss here. Thanks for reading.

Lap-band is self pay in Ontario so you don't have to do anything but find a clinic and book an appointment and go from there.

With a BMI of just over 35, you will never get approved for DS. OHIP recently stopped approving anyone for DS with a BMI below 50. You are eligible for RNY or VSG if you have a BMI of 35 plus co-morbidities or a BMI over 40 without co-morbidities. You don't have to go through any programs at all to get a referral for OHIP funded surgeries but you do need your doctor to refer you so if he/she won't refer you without doing this then you are kind of stuck.

If you decide to go the OHIP covered surgeries route, you might be better off going to Ontario, Canada That is the Ontario forum link and most there have had surgeries other than lap-band.

Hi and thanks for the reply. There seemed to be a glitch and I could not get back into the site as a registered user after I signed up. I thought I had posted in the Canadian posters spot but then again the glitch. lol Everything was kind of cycling slow that night.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
