Trouble Swallowing Day After Surgery

Recommended Posts

So I had my surgery yesterday and I'm having problems swallowing the smallest sips of Water. I've talked to my doctor about it, he almost wanted to keep me overnight, but didn't. However, it hurts when the liquid hits the area of my band. He said it's just intense swelling in the area. Anyone else have this problem? What helped?

I rotated my Frozen Protein Shakes with warm broths and teas(decaf). The swelling seems to go down pretty fast, I kept a constant flow of some kind of liquid going down. I used the Buillion cubes, that was a pretty quick fix item. I would sit and drink my Protein shakes, 1 cup at a time. I mixed by the pitcher and poured into paper cups and sat in freezer, since I was not supposed to lift anything over 5 lbs. and a gal of milk weighs about that.

This is the same feeling you will have with the restriction, so now it is swelling, soon to be less, and as you start your mushies in a couple of weeks you will feel the pressure against your esophagus(sp), and you will have to take that step slowly to allow the mushies to go down. This is when I started using a timer, If it would not go down in 30 minutes. I could not have any more. this sorta kept me in check for eating less than a cup of mushies at a time, every 2-3 hours. You will still need to Journal your food and liquids to make sure you are getting adequate amounts. Good luck and welcome to the world of bandsters.:w00t:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
