Safe to take ibprofen?

Recommended Posts

My husband had the surgery on Friday and is having trouble now with back pain. Has anyone taken liquid ibprofen so soon after surgery? I have a call in to the dr but haven't heard back. He's about done with the Lortab Elixr and they told him he could take regular liquid Tylenol when it was gone but Tylenol doesn't ever work very well for the type of pain he has in his back. Please help. Thanks.

I was told to avoid it because it's hard on your stomach. I would certainly wait until you hear back from the Dr.'s Office though. If you don't hear soon, I would call again.

I have back issues too so I can relate. I hope it gets better for him soon!

I would have him talk to the surgeon before taking ibuprofen because my surgeon says to stay away from all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) as they add to ulcer risk

Ibuprofen was also on my list of medicines not to take. Tylenol does nothing for me and I would probably have just as much pain relief from taking an m&m.

Since then I have been given the OK to use liquid ibuprofen on a very limited use (no more than twice a month) for inflammation. When I have used them I have followed it with a glass of milk.

They might give you the OK for occasional use, but you definitely need to get the approval from your doctor first.

A huge NO. My doc says never. Yes, they can give you ulcers - I can attest to that. With our smaller pouch, that chance is much higher. We were told that if we were prescribed a baby aspirin that we could take that daily. That is a very small amount. Don't take Ibuprofin or any other NSAIDs. You really don't want an ulcer - they are awful.

Occasional use perhaps if its really bad and nothing else works. But I'd put up with the pain wherever possible.

Occasionally (VERY occasionally) I will take it if I have a bad back. I had a very sore knee the other day and took one - we only had Nurofen to hand, the back pain one, which is very strong. Within 10 minutes my stomach was on fire, thank goodness I took it on an empty stomach and could guzzle Water to wash it through. The heartburn I had for the rest of the day scared the bejeezus out of me to be honest, it really rammed home just how bad those things are for your stomach. I really wont risk that again unless I'm in absolute agony.

uh oh. I take advil all the time, at least a few times a momth. I don't recall ever being told not to take it. In fact, I asked the nurse one at my doctors office if I could take the liquid gels and she said try the tablets but chop them up.

What else can I take for pain releif? The baby aspirin is not strong enough for me and I can't take the liquid tylenol because I bleach my teeth and the dye stains.

liquid ibprofen?? do they make that. I thought that the NSAID issue was the pill form because it sits in the spot and could cause the ulcer. I don't see how the liquid form could cause the same thing.

The Dr's office called back and said it was ok for him to take them if he crushed them and mixed them with applesauce. I looked for a liquid but they only make it for children so the tablets will work, I guess. He took 2 as suggested and then drank some Water and they seemed to help. Thanks everyone.

I am prescribed 800 mg ibuprofen 2 x's a day and my surgeon said it's ok. After all I've read about other Dr's views, I only take them when I absolutely cannot stand it anymore, usually when it's really damp. I just take my pain pills on a regular basis.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
