What happens if you get sick in your stomach? Not PB but say you have morning sickness, get the stomach flu, or a virus?

What about strep throat or bronchitis or something that makes you do lots of coughing? Does it cause the band to slip?

I am not having any of these problems, I just want to be prepared.

Thanks!

Hi, I'm new to this support group, but certainly not new to lb. I had my surgery in February 2002. I have not had a whole lot of nausea but because I'm a long time smoker, believe me I cough plenty. I've had absolutely no problems with band slippage. I even overate a couple of times, not a good idea, and it came up but it wasn't like with a stomach virus, no wretching, it just came back up. Sorry to be so gross, but I always tell it like it is, sometimes it's not pretty but that's what it is. I knew one person who did have a slippage, but it was because she was constantly overeating and forcing herself to throw up, yuk, and even with all of that it took about three months of the constant upchucks before the band finally slipped.

Hope this has been helpful to you. I look forward to joining this support group, I am in serious need of it.

Take care,

Cindy

I have heard that some people keep a "vomit suppresent" (if that's what its called) on hand to keep that from happening. I had a band slippage that I think was caused from a long intense sickness that caused a TON of vomiting and extremely bad coughing. But it lasted a long time and I don't know of anyone else whose dealt with that much coughing and vomiting - so my guess is you wouldn't have to worry about it.

A relative of mine also has the band and she's had your typical illnesses, flu, cold, etc and has never had a slippage because of that.

I have a script for Phenergan suppistories (sp?) in the fridge. They are to prevent nauesa, vomiting and motion sickness. I have not needed them but my PCP thought it would be a good idea to have them on hand. His thought was if I got sick at night or on the weekend by the time the night service paged him and he could call something in and actually get it filled, I could have thrown-up 4 or 5 times. This way I have it and as soon as that pukey feeling hits I can use one. ~Mandy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
