I have seen on these threads something about a "pre-op diet". Can someone tell me what that's about and how long you have to be on it before the surgery?

I have the initial consultation with the surgeon on Monday the 23rd. I am very anxious about this.

Thanks.

The pre-op diet is usually 3 days before surgery and it's a clear liquid diet only. It's just so that your spleen/liver (can't remember which on:)) is smaller, and that gives the doctor less of a chance of hitting it and causing complications during surgery.

Don't be nervous about the consultation. They are basically just going over most of the stuff that you already know about it...lol. Just ask questions!

Good luck and hoped this helped.

It seems like everyone's pre-op diet is different. From cal restriction to low carb to fluids. My surgeons is 7 days clear liquid with 3 protien shakes per day. It royally sucks. I am on day 4. On the bright side though it kicks off your weight loss.

Thanks to you both for your responses. Seems my pre-op diet will be at the choice of my surgeon, but it appears it will be a drastic claorie reduction either way.

I will continue to think positive and to put aside my anxiety. I really do want this. I MUST change my life and improve my health.

Again, thanks much. These message boards are lifesavers!

the preop diet is hard but u will do it because it's for surgery. i am glad i did it because i think i would have gone into shock from what i used to eat and now banded. just to let u know i did go out 2 nights before surgery and have a huge cheeseburger loaded with everything and never told. the surgeon said surgery was absolutely perfect and my liver was completely normal. (by the way that was the best cheeseburger i have ever had)

my surgery is on tuesday feb. 24th. my surgeons pre-op diet has been 4 sugar free carnation instant breakfasts a day , the the sugar fee kind of course. im supposed to be doing this for 7 days. the only things allowed in addition our calorie free drinks and sugar free Jello and popcicles. let me just tell you that it sucks! but i just keep remindfing myself that the end result is well worth what im doing now

I wish my pre-op diet had been 3 days. It was supposed to be 3 weeks, but I ended up doing it for 4 weeks because of the hurricane :sneaky: I had to have a Protein Shake for Breakfast and lunch and lean meat and vegetables for dinner. It was not easy, but I did not cheat. I lost 16 pounds on my pre-op diet. Every doctor is different and each one seems to have their own pre-op diet and post-op diet. Be sure to follow the one that your surgeon wants you to be on. I read about many on here that I wanted to adopt..... but.... I did what he wanted me to do so that I would be ready for my surgery. Good luck to you!!! Becky

I'm on Day 5 of a 3-week pre-op diet. Similar to what others have talked about: 2 shakes and a lean cuisine or equivalent calorie dinner or 4 shakes. I'm also allowed one 90-cal yogurt, salad greens with 1 cup cooked or 2 cups uncooked veggies and lemon juice or vinegar, and all the sugar-free Jello I can stomach.

This is definitely tough, but I'm also not easing up on working out, which isn't helping with hunger. The scale is spinning down at light speed though, 7-8 pounds since Tuesday.

My Doc explained that complex carbs are converted to Glycogen and stored in the liver. He said that the high Protein and low-carb approach helps to rid the body of this and shrink the liver. They must be able to get around the liver and under the diaphram to place the band, and if the liver is enlarged, it doesn't work. He explained that he's had to close the person back up without banding when they've not followed the plan. I've watched the procedure on YouTube, so I understand what he was talking about. He also told me I only get one last supper, not several. It's as if he read my mind...! My nutritionist later explained that you can get into trouble on the low carb diet, though, too. She said I can't just eat meat all day every day (not that I would, yuck), and if I haven't lost a pound within three days of the diet, I am doing something wrong. Good to know. I am going to pre-plan my meals and do an extra week of low-carb because I don't want to take any chances. I don't want to fly out there and wake up without a band. I would just die. I would die, especially if it is because I've done something wrong.

Hi 1960Poody. First of all, let me say - surgery in Cancun.... good pickin  Did your surgeon give you a pre-op diet? My pre-op diet was pretty clear - a low carb/high Protein Shake (I used Atkins) for breakfast and lunch, and then a small Protein and veggie dinner. I was supposed to be on it for 3 weeks, but it turned out to be longer due to unforseen circumstances..... a hurricane. Just be sure to follow your surgeon's instructions. Seems like every surgeon has their own pre-op and post-op diet. Good luck with your pre-op diet and your surgery too. Take care. Becky

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
