Moveable port after large weight loss

Recommended Posts

I hope there are a few people out there with similar a similar experience that is happening to me now and can offer some advise.

I went to my surgeon for a fill this week. I've done well and am now on the home stretch - I only have about 30 to 40 more pounds to lose!

The doc felt for the port and said it is moveable now. This can happen when you do well and lose lots of weight, he said. (I've lost 100+ pounds now total.) It isn't bad enough to make getting fills difficult yet, but from the way the doc spoke, I will need to get a repair job to anchor it back down on the abdominal wall eventually.

Has anyone else had this happen? At what point did you have it repaired? Did the port wander and cause pain or other problems besides getting fills?

Thanks for the help my friends!

I don't know, but I think that my port has moved up from last week. At that time I had lost about 21 lbs counting the 2 weeks pre band period. I had a fill last Wednesday, and it seems that my port shifted up about 1 inch up from last week and it gets a little sore since it is almost under my bra. Is that normal? I am worried that there is something wrong, but I can handle it being a little sore if there is nothing really wrong.

I don't have a moveable port problem but I did think, at one stage, that my port was moving up, because it used to be under my incision but now it's above.

So I asked my Dr, and he laughed and said your port isn't moving, your skin is! As I've lost weight, my skin has started to sag, and the incision has dropped a couple of inches! My port is where it's always been!

Not saying the same thing is happening, though!

Mine has become very visible and easily felt, but it hasnt moved. I dont see how losing weight would make it "move" in reality, although yes, it does seem to move in relation to the scar.

I don't think mine has actually moved, but it is definitely more prominent and hard as a rock - I have lost 68 lbs. What is the name of the little town near Stuttgart you live in? I spent a summer in Tubigen while in college at language school before going up to Heidelberg for school.

I've lost 31 pounds on my way to 110 pound loss and mine has definitely moved south about 2 inches from my incision. My surgeon said that is totally normal. I asked if we needed to move it back and he said not until it's time to have my abdominoplasty and breast reduction (the rashes and shoulder pain are awful!). He plans to coordinate with the plastic surgeon's office to be in the OR to move the port himself during surgery. So.....I would say talk to your doctor and go with his recommendation. You trusted him the first time, right?

Good luck to you!!

I have lost 103 pounds & I have about 40/45 to lose. Funny you mentioned your port moving. Recently my port has become very visible when I am lying down. I went to see my Dr. & the port had actually turned slightly. I don't have any pain related to it. He was able to do a fill but it was definitely more difficult than usual. I am actually having surgery in 2 days & the Dr is going to remove the old port & put in a new low port. He said also doing a lot of Core work (abs) it could slightly turn the port which is why he thinks mine turned. I decided to have the surgery now b/c my Dr was willing to do it. He said at this point it wouldn't make a difference if I waited or did it now. Personally I wanted to get it done before summer. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
