was wondering if there was a weight limit for lap band. Or is it just based on health related issues.

If your body can handle going under anethesia to have surgery then you would be fine. My doc puts all his patients through the ropes before surgery.. I had to do a pulmonary function test. If you have a heart condition he would also require a cardiac function test as well. Good luck:thumbup:

I don't know about all surgeons but my doc made me lose weight till I was under 400 lbs. He refused to do the surgery until then because he said there were major risks for high bmi's.

There is no hard and fast limit across all surgeons, but some will not want to do riskier surgeries at higher BMI's and may require weight loss first. It is also very dependent on other medical conditions present.

It also seems as though people with the highest BMI's are pushed more towards the R&Y route instead of the lapband. However, there are people who have had success with banding at relatively high BMI's.

I weighed 405 when I went to my 1st surgeon appt...had lost down a good bit by surgery though thanks to an extended preop diet. There doesn't seem to be a lower "limit" either...insurance won't pay unless you have a certain BMI but if you are self pay, seems like you can find a surgeon to do the surgery even if you are very close to your goal weight. (not all will do that, but you can find one who will). I had no heart or pulmonic issues (pretty healthy for a 50+ yo fat chick) so I'm sure that was part of the equation for me.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
