What should I do in preparation for surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure when my surgery will be. Hopefully in May or June. I haven't been approved yet for surgery. So what should I do in preparation for the surgery?

I love sugar, carbs, and pop. I tend to eat fast food too much. I'm not working out, but I'm planning to try to as soon as I'm 6 weeks postpartum from my c-section.

Do you have any advice for me? I really really want to give up the pop. Any other helpful hints that helped you lose more quickly? TIA!

If I can quit smoking you can quit soda! Simply as that :cursing: Ok so not so simple right? But you will do what is best for you and your band, you will learn to eat slower (trust me on that one) you will learn that sugar can send you into a tail spin or that you can enjoy it in moderation (whatever works for you)

Do what you need to do to take care of you and do it right!

Congrats- you had a baby!!!

Don't know if it will help, but it's what I am doing. I gave up (mostly) SWEET TEA, I drank it by the gallon daily. The replacement was the Wal-Mart or food Lion brand of Crystal Light type drink. It's flavored water really but it doesn't have the funky aftertaste of diet stuff that I hate. Also it comes in Raspberry and Peach Iced Tea, enough flavor to not miss the sugar. I also am weening myself off of the heavy lunches and dinners. Smaller portions on smaller plates, slowly started to replace one of those meals with a slim fast (equate) and I added a Breakfast drink (Carnation w/skim milk). I didn't usually eat breakfast and my doc says that has been a big part of weight problems. I have lost lbs without exercise. I am trying to move around the house more. I get up and just move, vac a little longer than needed, make more trips to put away the laundry. It hasn't been so much about losing pounds but prep for the pre op liquid diet. Many here say they are straving by the third day and I wanted to help stop that if I can. It's been about a month and I feel OK about it if I have a "bad" day. I start the real liquid diet on the 23rd. so I hope this has worked the way I wanted it to. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice!

We just have to stop buying the stupid pop! ha ha ha I gave up caffeine for a year, I think I can do pop. So is Crystal Light the best stuff out there?

I've never been really big on pop, but I do enjoy Crystal Lite sometimes. There is a pretty good mix-in from Special K that is a Protein Water. It's the strawberry-kiwi flavor. There are also some hot-teas that I like. One is a strawberry and one is a vanilla. I can't remember the brands, but you might browse the hot teas if it is a part of the store that you haven't been to lately. Do be careful to avoid black teas and stick to the herbal if you have trouble with heartburn, though. Oh, and avoid any of the diet teas that contain Senna unless you know what it is and how your body will respond. Just trust me on that one. I found that I like filtered water (Britta) better than I like tap water, but do remember that you filter out important minerals and fluoride if you don't drink tap water. You can do it. So can I!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
