Bandnerd 0 Posted February 15, 2009 Hello, I am quite embarrassed by what I did, but I did do it. I have changed a lot of habits before surgery and thought I could handle a liquid diet after surgery, but I guess I messed up. Last night -- within 3 hours, I ate 6 cups of Campbell's cream of chicken Soup. I will never do this again, but I just couldn't stop myself. Today I am having some painful burp feelings where I want to burp but cannot. Could I have done damage to sutures 5 days out of surgery by eating like that? I feel terrible about doing that and have removed all Soups from the house.. I only have Protein Shakes and fruit juice here now which I cannot over-eat on (Yuck). Is this burping/can't burp hurting feeling normal or did I mess up my sutures?
crzytchr 3 Posted February 15, 2009 You should call your dr's office to make sure. For the most part, the Soup probably goes right through your band, but you must make sure everything is ok.
nfl1 0 Posted February 15, 2009 Wow, I had about 1/2 mug of cream of chicken a couple days post op, and went back for another half and was so uncomfortable - I can so relate - I agree though it probably went through the band, but I was uncomfortable for hours (it was night-time) and I never did it again, but still WANTED the warm Soup every day. Headhunter 6 Posted February 15, 2009 Yeah, call your Dr. But, I'm pretty sure that you didn't do any damage. 6 Cups is a LOT in a short time period, so you need to avoid doing that! One of the biggest reasons people have problems with their bands post-op is because they DON'T follow their Surgeon's instructions, the Surgeon didn't give instructions, or the instructions weren't adequate. I think a lot of people have the Band installed because they think that it's going to do all the work for them. It doesn't. YOU have to do the work, the band is just a mechanical device that assists you. You've got to make the right decisions about what you eat, when you eat, how fast you're gonna eat, etc. The band can work if YOU do! Let us know what happens! Leonnoel 0 Posted February 15, 2009 I understand how you feel. I am about 11 days post op and I had a horrible weekend! I ate everything I could get my hands on and it was not all liquids like it should be. Everything seemed to go right through my band and I had no restrictions and the more I realized that I had no restrictions the more I ate! This evening I'm extremely depressed and wonder why I did this. I was so happy at the time because I was not hungry...what does one do when they have messed up so bad?? I guess I need to start fresh and move forward. The liquid diet is horrible and mushies I'm sure will be just as bad. But I need to be strong I know that. iwalktheline 1 Posted February 15, 2009 don't feel bad. you have an addiction to food like the rest of us. food=comfort. so i am being banded tomorrow and i feel sad tonight. i think it's because i have been on a strict diet for 2 weeks and i hate every minute of it. i break it more and more as each day approaches. i went out on friday to Cheeseburger in Paradise and had a big burger and it was everything i could have ever imagined. i swear i think i saw fireworks when i took my first bite. im just going to take it day by day and do my best. hang in there. avanderhoof 0 Posted February 15, 2009 You have to be strong and pull through. I am 5 days post op, and honestly I don't think that I could eat that much. If you are able to eat that much you have to use good judgment and lots of will power. I have told everyone in my family that if I eat more than 1/2 cup of anything that I want to be reminded not to. Maybe you should ask for help the first week or so.
hootie 0 Posted February 16, 2009 whilst 6 cups of Soup is a lot, I was told I could consume freely anything on my "full liquids" list so maybe you're okay. I'm only 4 days post-op so i don't have a whole lot of advice for you but i can sure feel your pain.... Hang in there! tomorrow is another day! try to put this behind you.... heatherv 0 Posted February 16, 2009 WOW that's a lot of soup! Everyone is right though - probably didn't hurt anything since it was liquid. Just be careful. Watch the juice too, I was told to stay away from juice since it has high sugar content.
hootie 0 Posted February 16, 2009 Watch the juice too, I was told to stay away from juice since it has high sugar content. Yeah, juice isn't on the list of things I'm allowed to consume either. I'm surprised there is such a variance in what one doctor allows vs another. I see a Protein shakes on many people's lists and whilst i'm allowed to have them, I was told if I felt I just MUST have Protein, to use flavorless powder stirred into Soups but that it wasn't recommended and actually even advised against it. Seems like there would be more consistency....
KimmyQ 0 Posted February 16, 2009 Hello I doubt you messed up anything. The first night after surgery I had a little too much chicken broth or gatorade & vomited many times. i think that would happen before any damage would happen.
cindie74 0 Posted February 16, 2009 dont worry, my doctor said you could eat as many Soups as you like post op,because they are very low in fat and wont damage anything. you'll be fine
ZiggyLove 0 Posted February 16, 2009 I can relate to the burp feeling (not being able to and feeling pain). I think I've been eating too fast, not taking the tiny sips they recommended. So today I'm eating VERY slow, and so far so good. Seriously a cup of Soup should take you an hour to eat, so therefore 6 cups are ok but should take you 6 hours to eat. I was eating that V8 brocolli cream Soup (omg so good) and since I was hungry ate too fast and paid for it all night with the pain of feeling like I had to burp, plus gas. We have this band to force us to eat right! Although, eating so slow is torture for me, lol. I'm getting adjusted though. You will too!
AngelWhisper 0 Posted February 16, 2009 I had that feeling like I had to burp but couldn't for 2 weeks after my surgery. It was so incredibly painful I broke into tears a few times. I thought my insides were going to explode. That does pass in time though, thankfully.
