Pain Relief Systems

Recommended Posts

Did anyone go home with a pain relief system in place? Something to deliver meds for 2-5 days attached to a catheter that had to be removed by you or the doctor?

I didn't and I haven't heard of anyone having one. For me, it wasn't necessary. I had pain, but it was controlled with the pain meds they prescribed.

I was prescribed liquid Vicodin..... Took it about every 4-5 hours the first couple days and definitely before going to bed at night the first week and a half. I took partial doses randomly after that if I had port area pain so I could sleep (which I had sporatically for about a month after). Everyone is different but due to the angle of my chair at work sometimes I would come home and be really sore where my port was healing.

I don't think you'll need anything as major as an inserted pain system for this...Honestly-the gas pain is the worst part. And healing around where the port is while it develops scar tissue etc.

Gosh no, a few paracetamol tablets for a day or two is all that's required for many people. I didnt even need that, didnt have any pain relief after the first day.

I had one in me (Called the OnQ system I believe) It wasn't put in right, was too far over & didn't numb the area. So basically it was just a ball attached to a catheter in my skin that I had to carry around in the hospital-along with all the other wires and such-and have to worry about dropping.

They took it out right before I left to go home, but when it's in correctly, you (the patient) take it out at home.

When they took it out it took about 1/2 second and it didn't hurt when she did it at all. I wish I could say the same about when I took the band-aid off.

I didn't get any Morphine while I was in the hospital as they thought this thing was working correctly. Never having had surgery before, I though the pain was normal.

It sucked and the Vicodin I went home with didn't really help much.

I've not had any problem taking pills since the surgery either.

Don't know how normal that is.

I had an OnQ too (ball attached to a catheter that bathes the abdomin in lidocaine or a drug like it). It drove me INSANE having that ball thing hanging out of me and DH removed it for me as soon as we got home (about 6 hours post op). It's no big deal to remove and is supposed to (and probably does) help with pain but having it on my left side was so bothersome I couldn't stand it. I wasn't in pain anyway, at least nothing that tylenol couldn't handle.

And about the OnQ thing...it isn't really "deep" but is long enough to wash the area in the drug that slowly infuses...when you remove the catheter you'll see holes along it... if you have pain, and it's properly placed, it can be a godsend.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
