Pre-op diet...So Hungry!

Recommended Posts

Help! I am on day 3 of my pre-op diet, which is Optifast liquid diet. I am SO hungry! Any advice for fighting the hunger monster? My surgeon's office says to stick to the liquid diet only and to drink more shakes if I am still hungry. I live with my husband and two teenage kids. My husband is doing the liquid diet with me for support (:frown:) and my kids are fending for themselves. I do okay until I smell the food they are making! I work at home and my office is about 5 feet from the kitchen! :cursing: It's going to be a long journey! But I am hanging in there...just wanted some advice or pep talk!

You guys are awesome! :frown:

Hang in there. I "cheated" on my preop diet (lost 15 pounds anyway) and came to in recovery WITHOUT the band! That was a horrible horrible feeling....so use me as a horrible warning and inspiration. When you smell food, just think to yourself how terrible it would be to NOT get the band! Good luck!

You should ask your doctor if you can add fruit to your shakes. It makes them a little thicker and holds you better.

On my liqued diet, I cheated with half a broiled chicken breast for lunch and the other half for dinner. Still lost 13lbs and surgery was no problem.

I haven't done it yet so this is off the top of my head. See if you can have anything with zero calories like...popsciles, crystal light type drinks. They might help fill without adding anything, and of course MORE WATER!! I am just trying to cut out stuff as I go along so that when I start the pre op liquid diet I will have an easier time. I replaced really SWEET tea with the Great Value (WalMart) sugar free drinks. Raspberry drink and Iced Tea with Peach has enough flavor that I don't miss the sugar and lable is straight zeros:rolleyes: More Fluid might make you fill fuller, and help flush out the bad stuff.

I cheated on my pre-op diet and called and told on myself and was told to make sure I drink the Protein Shakes that was important--- surgery was fine -- I just cheated a little b/c I was straving

I am sorry to hear you are so hungry. My doctor put me on liquids but I could have Soup, yogert and lots of different liquids so I could get some flavor. Hang in there it will be worth it. Maybe you could go for a walk while your family is cooking. I only have my husband but it did not bother me to watch him eat I just kept thinking I waited for 8 months to get my surgery date and I wanted it so bad. I lost almost 10 lbs before the surgery so it was worth it. Hang in there.

Thank you guys so much for your advice and kind words, they really do help! It's day 4 now and it is getting better, but today being Valentine's Day is rough because we usually Celebrate with a nice dinner. But I am trying to keep the big picture in focus and remember why I am doing this!! I have been putting berries in my shakes in the mornings. It seems about 3pm-ish, I get really hungry and want to chew something! I have chewed 2 packs of gum in the last 4 days! ha ha

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
